Job Summary: The Office of Inspector General (OIG), U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) works to promote efficiency and effectiveness, and prevent or stop waste, fraud, and abuse in the DOT. The Inspector General Act of 1978 gives the Office of Inspector General autonomy to do its work without interference. OIG carries out its mission by issuing audit reports, evaluations, management advisories, and other products with findings and recommendations to improve program delivery and performance.

Major Duties:

  • Under the authority of the Inspector General Act of 1978, and under the general direction of the Deputy Inspector General and the Principal Assistant Inspector General for Investigations (PAIGI), you will be responsible for the overall management, direction and coordination of regional/field investigative activities and headquarters functions relating to Department of Transportation (DOT) programs, contractors, and alleged improprieties on the part of Departmental employees. You will be responsible for the coordination of fraud prevention, detection, and investigation efforts with DOT Operating Administrations, state and local governments, and DOT grantees regarding aviation safety, contract/grant fraud, illegal transportation of hazardous materials and/or Federal Motor Carrier fraud crimes. You will coordinate the development of investigative policies to continually improve investigative techniques and to improve the coverage, quality, and effectiveness of investigative reports.

Qualifications: As a basic requirement for entry into the Senior Executive Service (SES), you must show in your resume evidence of progressively responsible leadership experience that is indicative of senior executive level management capability and that is directly related to the skills and abilities outlined under the Technical Qualifications and Executive Core Qualifications listed below. TECHNICAL QUALIFICATIONS (TQs): You must address the following technical qualifications clearly in your resume. Demonstrated executive-level experience in law enforcement related activities including the following: arrests, search warrants, electronic surveillance, consensual monitoring, undercover operations, emergency operations, protective operations, information management, and computer forensics and the use of information technology as an investigative tool. Demonstrated executive-level experience leading, directing, and monitoring a comprehensive criminal or administrative investigative program. This may involve broad and complex issues of fraud, waste, abuse, or misconduct by senior officials throughout a large geographically dispersed professional workforce.
