JOB PURPOSE:
Reporting to the Executive Director for Campus Life, the Assistant Director oversees the planning, development, and implementation of civic, social, and leadership development, educational and training programs and services provided by the Office of Campus Life. Responsible for the direction and determination of goals, objectives, and the means to achieve these goals by management of services, planning of budgets, and serving on various committees. Some travel, and work during evening, late night and weekend hours as required.
SUPERVISORY ACCOUNTABILITY:
Supervises professional, support and student staff and monitors financial resources.
NATURE AND SCOPE:
Internal contacts include administrators, faculty, students and staff of the Department and the University. External contacts include contractors, media representatives, alumni, visitors, general public, and members of the local, national and international community.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Negotiates or causes to be negotiated contracts for the Campus Life and student sponsored university-wide programming and series.
- Develops and implements an on-going marketing and promotion plan for Student Leadership development and programs.
- Conducts research on available programs, external funding sources and cooperative programming throughout the University in support of cultural programs.
- Ability to organize work effectively, conceptualize, prioritize objectives, and exercise independent judgment based on an understanding of organizational policies and activities.
- Plan, administer and monitor the departments and student organization capital equipment, operation, and programming budgets.
- Provides a welcoming and inclusive environment to all students, faculty, staff, and guests of the Armour J. Blackburn University Center by offering assistance whenever needed.
- Co-sponsor programs with the campus community and the community-at-large expanding the social, cultural, and educational offering to our students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community.
- Serve as key liaison to academic units, departmental representatives, student organizations, community groups, security, physical plant public safety, and provides administrative advisement for events planning for student organizations and within the Campus Life Unit.
- Provides immediate supervision to the Program Coordinator for Student Leadership Development and is responsible for training and performance management.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
CORE COMPETENCIES:
- Considerable knowledge of administrative and management principles, theories and practices related to leadership development, ethical and civic leadership, student development, public relations, marketing, budgetary planning, and inventory control.
- Considerable knowledge of training development and principles of supervision.
- Performs public relations functions for special events by greeting event coordinator at the beginning of an event and continuing with follow-ups during and after the event.
- Plans, facilitates, implements, and evaluates comprehensive training, leadership, and professional development programs for student leaders.
- Plan, facilitate, implement, and evaluate university wide activities and events in coordination with student organizations and other campus units and departments.
- Advise student organizations planning large campus-wide events including the preparation of contracts, marketing, ticket sales, venue and equipment rentals, and logistics.
- Serves as primary advisor for the Howard University Student Association (HUSA) Senate, Undergraduate Student Association, Howard University Royal Court, and College/School Councils.
- Skilled in conflict resolution and mediation.
- Skilled in operation of computers and related software applications.
- Skilled in utilizing social media platforms and promoting/marketing department programs and initiatives.
- Ability to manage complex programs through subordinate staff; analyze and solve problems involving many variables; read, interpret, and prepare technical reports and correspondence; communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with diverse population; make oral presentations to large groups; work independently under numerous and diverse demands; organize work efficiently and provide a high level of customer service and professionalism.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor’s degree required; Master's degree in College Student Personnel, Student Development, College Union Management, Higher Education Administration, or related field preferred and five years progressively responsible student affairs/campus life experience, which included at least two years at the supervisory level; or an equivalent combination of education or experience.
