Plains is currently has 2 Engineering student positions open to join our team as a Great Lakes Operations Engineering Intern for a 4, 8 or 12-month term beginning January 6, 2025. The successful candidate(s) will be exposed to a broad cross section of disciplines within the Operations Engineering whose assets include pipelines, processing facilities, caverns, reservoirs, truck and rail Loading facilities in Great Lakes Region (Sarnia).  Skills developed over this term will touch on the breadth of the roles typical of an Engineering group in a midstream company. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Develop an understanding of processes and overall function of Operations Engineering and processing units; 
  • Achieve and complete assigned tasks as outlined at the beginning of the work term. These include, but are not limited to: 
    • Participate in developing solutions to technical issues and verifying the implementation of these solutions 
    • Prepare and present summary reports, performance metrics reports, graphical representation and presentations, as required 
    • Facilitate initiatives to drive continuous improvement of our processes 
    • Perform calculations, modeling,  and data analyses 
    • Perform engineering mandates: hydraulic calculations, control valve sizing, instrumentation, process condition validation, etc 
    • Evaluate the performance of process equipment (pumps, exchangers, furnaces, etc.) 
    • Assist in the evaluation of the performance of production units 
    • Apply engineering theory to determine solutions, considering impacts of risk and safety 
    • As-building the P&IDs. Data gathering from the field and DCS/PI 
  • Assist with document control. Digitize the documents, project files and upload them to adept. 
  • Complete and present an assigned project(s); 
  • Attend internal/external meetings; and 
  • Assist in various ad hoc requests as required in support of experienced engineers or corporate initiatives. 

Qualifications: 

  • Minimum 2nd year student enrolled in full-time studies in a post-secondary institution, working towards a bachelor’s degree in Engineering – ideally Chemical or Mechanical; 
  • Both formal and non-formal co-op students are eligible to apply; 
  • Previous work terms are considered an asset; 
  • A self-starter who is driven to learn; 
  • Ability to synthesize information to get to key aspects and provide supported conclusions/recommendations; 
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment; 
  • Must have a high level of accuracy and attention to detail; 
  • Demonstrated strong analytical and organizational skills; 
  • Proficiency with MS Office including Excel, Word and Outlook; 
  • Familiarity with database programs; 
  • Ability to read P&IDs and perform simulation will be considered an asset; 
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and work as a team player; 
  • Ability to work well within a team environment and under minimal supervision; 
  • Preference will be given to a student who will be returning to university to finish their undergraduate degree following the completion of this work term; 
  • Interns must be able and willing to relocate themselves within 100KM of our Sarnia facility for the entire duration of the work term; 
  • Interns must be able to commit to a 4, 8 or 12-month work term starting January 6, 2025 to be considered for the program;
  • Compliance with the Company’s drug and alcohol policy including pre-employment D&A testing;
  • The successful candidate must provide satisfactory references and complete a Criminal Background Check; and  
  • Valid Driver’s license with a clean driving abstract.
