The Opportunity:

CACI is currently looking for a Cloud Operations Engineer (AWS/Google Cloud) with agile methodology experience to join our BEAGLE (Border Enforcement Applications for Government Leading-Edge Information Technology) Agile Solution Factory (ASF) Team supporting Customs and Border Protection (CBP) client located in Northern Virginia!

Join this passionate team of industry-leading individuals supporting the best practices in Agile Software Development for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). As a member of the BEAGLE ASF Team, you will support the men and women charged with safeguarding the American people and enhancing the Nation’s safety, security, and prosperity. CBP agents and officers are on the front lines, every day, protecting our national security by combining customs, immigration, border security, and agricultural protection into one coordinated and supportive activity.

ASF programs thrive in a culture of innovation and are constantly seeking individuals who can bring creative ideas to solve complex problems, both technical and procedural at the team and portfolio levels. The ability to be adaptable and to work constructively with a technically diverse and geographically separated team is crucial. You should have worked with or have a strong interest in agile software development practices and delivering deployable software in short sprints.

In this pivotal role, you will serve as the crucial technical bridge and single point of contact between our development teams and the broader CBP cloud infrastructure teams. You will leverage your expertise across both Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud Platform (GCP) to design, cost estimate, deploy, administer, manage, and support a diverse array of cloud services. This includes critical components like Kubernetes clusters, virtual machines, and cloud-hosted databases. Your deep understanding of cloud operations will ensure seamless collaboration on patching, security, and overall system health, driving the efficiency and security of our border enforcement applications.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, implement, administer, and optimize robust cloud infrastructure and services across Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud Platform (GCP). This includes virtual machines, networking, storage, and cloud-hosted databases.
  • Deploy, manage, and scale containerized applications using Kubernetes (EKS/GKE), ensuring high availability, performance, and security for critical workloads.
  • Translate business requirements into practical cloud solutions and technical designs, including system diagrams, documentation, and service descriptions. Provide cost estimations and proactively identify opportunities to optimize cloud spend.
  • Act as the primary technical point of contact and bridge between development teams and external/centralized CBP cloud infrastructure teams. Facilitate communication, requirements gathering, and problem resolution for all cloud-related aspects.
  • Oversee the full lifecycle of cloud services, from initial deployment to ongoing operation, maintenance, and support. Implement and manage CI/CD pipelines for cloud resource provisioning and application deployment.
  • Proactively monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize system performance and reliability across cloud environments. Develop and implement scripting solutions for automation and operational efficiency.
  • Ensure cloud environments adhere to security best practices, industry standards, and CBP compliance requirements. Collaborate with security teams on vulnerability remediation, patching, and audit responses.
  • Stay abreast of emerging cloud technologies and best practices. Evaluate and recommend new tools, services, and technical approaches to accelerate the adoption of advanced cloud capabilities and support system modernizations and migrations.

Qualifications:

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen with the ability to pass CBP background investigation, criteria include but are not limited to:
    • 3 year check for felony convictions
    • 1 year check for illegal drug use
    • 1 year check for misconduct such as theft or fraud
  • College degree (B.S.) in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Management Systems or a related discipline. Equivalent professional experience will be considered in lieu of degree.
  • Professional Experience: at least seven (7) years of hands-on experience in cloud operations, system administration, or DevOps roles.
    • Minimum five (5) years of hands-on working experience with both Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud Platform (GCP) services.
    • Expertise in deploying, managing, and troubleshooting container orchestration platforms, specifically Kubernetes (EKS, GKE).
    • Proven experience with various cloud services, including virtual machines (EC2, GCE), networking, storage, and cloud-hosted databases (e.g., RDS, Cloud SQL).
    • Strong scripting and automation skills (e.g., Python, Bash, PowerShell) for managing cloud resources and operational tasks.
    • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and tools for automated deployments and infrastructure as code (IaC) principles.
    • Familiarity with cloud cost management principles and tools to optimize resource utilization.
    • Working knowledge of security best practices in cloud environments and experience with vulnerability remediation and patching processes.
  • Strong ability to analyze complex technical problems, propose practical solutions, and troubleshoot issues across distributed cloud systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively interface with technical and non-technical personnel, including development teams and external cloud service providers.
  • Experience working in an Agile/DevSecOps environment.
  • Able to work a hybrid schedule with an on-site requirement of 2-3 days per week at a Government site in Ashburn, VA.

Desired:

  • Cloud certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate/Professional, AWS Certified DevOps Engineer - Professional, Google Cloud Professional Cloud Architect, Google Cloud Professional DevOps Engineer).
  • Demonstrated experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools beyond just principles (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation, Google Cloud Deployment Manager).
  • Familiarity with monitoring and logging tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, ELK stack, CloudWatch, Stackdriver.
  • Experience with advanced networking concepts in a multi-cloud environment.
  • Strong leadership capabilities with a proven track record of mentoring junior team members or leading technical initiatives.
  • Exceptional analytical, conceptual, and problem-solving abilities, especially in complex, high-stakes environments.
  • Prior experience with system modernizations and migrations from on-premise to cloud or between cloud providers.
