For more than 55 years, Family Health Centers of San Diego’s (FHCSD) mission has been to provide caring, affordable, high-quality health care and supportive services to everyone, with a special commitment to uninsured, low-income and medically underserved persons.

FHCSD is one of the top 10 largest federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) in the country. We operate more than 90 sites across San Diego County, including 29 primary care clinics, 23 behavioral health facilities, 10 physical rehabilitation clinics, nine dental clinics, five vision clinics, four outpatient substance use treatment programs, three mobile medical units, two mobile counseling centers, two urgent care centers, and a pharmacy.

Our staff provides care to over 227,000 patients each year, of whom 91% are low-income and 29% are uninsured. FHCSD provides care to all. Services include, but are not limited to adult care, chronic disease management, pediatrics, comprehensive women’s care including obstetrics, dental, vision, case management, physical rehabilitation, speech therapy for children, vaccinations, infectious diseases, behavioral health, substance use counseling and a host of specialty services including cardiology, podiatry, endocrinology, dermatology, among others.  FHCSD also offers supportive services to those who are unsheltered and in need of intensive case management.   

The breadth of our clinic locations, services and programs has grown over the last five decades, making us the largest community clinic provider of health care to the uninsured in the county and one of the top 10 largest community clinic organizations in the nation. We are also the largest health care safety-net provider, largest school-based health care provider and the largest mental health provider in the San Diego region.

Job Roles 

  • Provide direct supervision (individual and/or triadic supervision) to ACSWs and AMFTs. Provides feedback on performance evaluations, disciplinary actions, staff schedules, timekeeping and other areas as needed.

  • Supports the recruiting, selection, hiring, onboarding, and training of associate therapists, in collaboration with program management.

  • Provide at minimum 1 hour of individual consultation to each assigned associate therapist per month.

  • Review and co-sign progress notes.

  • Review letters and co-sign as appropriate.

  • Sign and comply with required supervision-related forms.

  • Provide ad-hoc consultations and assistance with patient crisis and safety concerns.

  • Review Incident Reports related to Associate Therapists.

  • Ensure compliance and timely submission of required BBS documentation, including but not limited to: Supervisory Plan, Weekly log, Experience Verification Form, Supervisory Responsibility Statement, Complete assessment of ongoing strengths and limitations of Supervisee 1x/year, and at end of supervisory relationship.

  • Complete Supervisor Self-Assessment Report due to the BBS.

  • Provide clinical oversight for the extended Social Services team of social workers, case managers, etc.

  • Conduct Clinical Quality Assurance activities including regular chart reviews and preparation for medical record reviews.

  • Provide direct clinical care services (i.e., carries own caseload, etc.).

  • Provide services to a wide range of patients including children and adults who have incurred mental illness.

  • Complete all required documentation accurately, in a timely manner, and thoroughly in accordance with department standards; in addition, documentation complies with patients' insurance requirements.

  • Perform initial and on-going assessments for assigned patients. Participate in development of patients' individualized care plans, in a timely and thorough manner.

  • Provide treatment to assigned patients within scope of practice, meeting program/department productivity and quality standards. Demonstrate awareness of transference and countertransference issues and address them as they arise. Address co-occurring disorders, factoring them into patient's treatment plan. Demonstrate clinical skills and judgment necessary to implement the treatment plan.

  • Work effectively as a member of the multi-disciplinary treatment team. Communicate with providers, physicians, case managers, scheduling staff, referring providers, and with outside agencies and authorities, in a timely and appropriate manner. Connect patients to internal/external resources as appropriate, accurately document referrals.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Education/Certifications/Licenses/Registrations 

  • Master’s Degree in Social Work (MSW).

  • Possess a current and active California license issued by the Board of Behavioral Science as an LCSW that is not under suspension or probation.

  • Traveling between sites and other locations is occasionally required. Must have a valid California driver’s license, an automobile, and proof of minimum levels of car insurance as required under California law, although limits of $100,000 are recommended. An acceptable driving record is also required. California law requires all drivers to obtain a valid California driver’s license within ten days of establishing residency. Reasonable accommodation may be provided on a case-by-case basis. Mileage and other reimbursement governed by policy.

Experience/Specialized skills (including Language) 

  • Have been licensed in California or any other state for at least two (2) years out of the last five (5) years prior to the commencement of supervision.

  • Have practiced psychotherapy during at least two (2) years out of the last five (5) years prior to the commencement of supervision.

  • Provided direct supervision to ASWs, Associate Professional Clinical Counselors, Marriage and Family Therapist Trainees, or Associate Marriage and Family Therapists who perform psychotherapy during at least two (2) years out of the last five (5) years prior to the commencement of supervision. Supervision of psychotherapy performed by a student shall be accepted if substantially equivalent to the supervision required for registrants.

  • Must complete a minimum of 15 hours of supervision training that meets the course provider and course content requirements specified in regulation within 60 days of the commencement of supervision. Six hours of continuing professional development in supervision is required each renewal cycle thereafter.

  • Experience in providing counseling services to varying population groups.

  • Experience providing supervision to associate therapists.

  • Ability to maintain good interpersonal interactions with clients and co-workers as a member of a multi-disciplinary community health team with a diverse multi-cultural population.

  • Ability to provide support, structure, empathy, sound judgment, and insight into human behavior and family relations.

  • Ability to work well in both a team-based environment and independently.

  • Basic computer literacy ability to comply with department needs and expectations (i.e., electronic medical record documentation, obtaining background information and reports on patients, following up on appts, etc.).

  • Bilingual in Spanish/English preferred.

  • Clinical skills appropriate to scope of practice and clinical judgment necessary to implement the treatment plan.

  • Demonstrated ability to be culturally sensitive and respect diversity.

  • Good written and verbal communication skills.

  • Knowledge of behavior modification theories.

  • Knowledge of current counseling theories and best practices, and ability to translate best practices into meaningful, culturally appropriate resources.

Work Environment
FHCSD's services are all outpatient and designed for those struggling with mild to moderate acuity levels. You will have support from other therapists, case managers, a scheduling team, administrators, and a wide range of other medical professionals in our facilities. The Mental Health Department strives to create an inclusive community that fosters teamwork and continuous learning. In addition to a structured orientation process, all newly hired therapists participate in our Buddy Program so you have a designated peer to help you adjust and succeed in your new position.

Our History

Family Health Centers of San Diego (FHCSD) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization rich in history and tradition. In 1911, the San Diego Industrial School was built on the site where our first clinic now stands. This school was originally a settlement house that provided Barrio Logan’s immigrant residents with social services. The community grew around this location, and by 1940, Barrio Logan had become one of the largest Mexican-American communities on the West Coast.

In October 1970, Laura Rodriguez and a group of community members sought to bring much-needed medical services to Barrio Logan. The day the group began occupying the building, Laura had attended a Barrio Logan Community Action Committee meeting where she passionately advocated that it should function as the site of a community health clinic. When the request fell on deaf ears, the protest was initiated that evening. Other community members, including several fearless abuelitas, participated in the building occupation by remaining inside overnight. When the police arrived, none dared arrest the grandmothers.

After eight days of occupation, succeeded in negotiations with the City of San Diego and the community. This led to the gifting of the building to the community of Barrio Logan and the establishment of the Chicano Free Clinic. Medical care delivery began two evenings a week, and the health center saw approximately 150 patients each month.

This building eventually became Logan Heights Family Health Center, the flagship clinic of Family Health Centers of San Diego (FHCSD). FHCSD has since transformed into the tenth largest health centers in the country, providing care to over 227,000 patients each year, of whom 91% are low-income and 29% are uninsured.
