Compensation Range

Job Summary

The Clinical Research Nurse will work in collaboration with the research team (Lab Manager, Research Assistants/Techs and trainees) to recruit and conduct clinical studies focused on newborn brain injury. They will be responsible for screening, recruitment, assessment and ongoing follow-up of research participants in accordance with study protocols. The Research Nurse will also collect participant data and complete study documentation. They may collect biological samples and review test results, as applicable.

 

This position is situated at the BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute and study participants will be recruited from the NICU at BC Women’s Hospital. Working conditions consist of locked office with office furnishings and research computer. In addition to the NICU, outpatient visits are performed in clinical offices at BC Children’s Hospital, and research recording and communication occurs within the research office.

Organizational Status
Position requires a working relationship with other Research staff. Accepts direction and ultimately accountable to the Principal Investigator. This position requires close interaction with study participants.

Work Performed

  • Review patient charts and identify eligible infants for participation based on study protocols and clinical inclusion and exclusion criteria.

  • Interpret clinical information from medical records, including medication exposure and relevant health data

  • Perform recruitment for studies by providing potential study participants with all the necessary background information, purpose, procedures and potential benefits and risks of study

  • Coordinate and schedule research visits and procedures conducted in clinical and outpatient settings, including research brain MRI appointments.

  • Collect participant data, complete study documentation, and maintain accurate research records.

  • Review data for completeness and consistency and work with the research team to resolve discrepancies.

 

Consequence of Error/Judgement
The consequences of errors could include: lost data, financial difficulty, compromised integrity of research, and success of research project.

 

Supervision Received
The position will perform duties independently. PI and/or his/her designate will provide broad directives. The Research Nurse will be provided with clear instructions as to how data should be collected and stored and will collaborate with other study team members.

Minimum Qualifications

Registered Nurse with BCCNM plus a minimum of one year of nursing experience.

Preferred Qualifications

One (1) year of experience in a clinical position, preference for Neonatal Intensive Care and/or Neurology experience

 

Clinical and research experience preferred. Experience with recruitment, consent and assent procedures, data collection, and research protocols preferred. Understanding of the research ethics process. Familiarity with MRI environment is preferred. High degree of computer literacy including familiarity with word processing, spreadsheets, and Internet resource use. Effective interpersonal, oral and written communication, apply decision-making and analytical skills, organization and problem-solving skills. Professional approach and ability to interact appropriately with study participants. Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Ability to exercise tact and discretion when handling sensitive and/or confidential matters. Ability to work independently and in a team environment. Schedule flexibility (e.g. after-hours or weekend)
