Job/Position Summary:

This research position provides general administrative, financial, and research support to meet program goals and objectives of the preclinical, clinical and translational research within the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition at BC Children’s Hospital. Working with cross-functional project team members in a strongly collaborative and collegial fashion, responsibilities include study protocol development, ethics submission, grant writing, contract submissions, project budgets development, personnel and student recruitment and evaluation, literature reviews, manuscript development, data management, as well as patient partnership activities and knowledge translation. This position will be in person at the Division of Gastroenterology, BC Children’s Hospital, with limited opportunities for remote work.

 

Organizational Status:

The Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition is a provincial resource providing a broad range of health services to British Columbia’s pediatric population of over one million individuals. The division has a diverse research portfolio representing multiple subspecialty areas, and faculty members comprising of a research chair as well as fourteen physicians. Recognized for our basic science and clinical research programs, current research strengths have focused on host defense, clinical epidemiology, inflammatory bowel disease and liver disease.

 

Reporting to the GI division’s research leadership team as well as the division head, this research position will work closely with our UBC, BCCHRI and PHSA staff, clinicians, researchers, trainees, and partners as we further develop and grow the research program.

 

Major Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates all activities related to the research project and knowledge translation of the products of this research

  • Works collaboratively with the research team and partners to facilitate implementation of projects, including assisting in developing detailed work plans, standard operating procedures (SOPs), consent forms, recruitment documents, REDCap databases, and surveys, to support meeting the objectives of the research project

  • Leads data collection activities, extracts and conducts preliminary analyses

  • Ensures that data is appropriately archived and that multiple data sets are appropriately configured to ensure they can be merged

  • Assists in the preparation, submission and tracking of research ethics board applications, amendments, and renewals, ensuring full compliance with regulatory requirements.

  • Ensures ethical standards of research are followed, monitored and maintained

  • Oversees and conducts literature review processes

  • Collaborates with pharmaceutical sponsors and healthcare staff and interacts with study participants and families

  • Consents participants for various research studies and responds to their inquiries related to on-going research

  • Monitors workflow and data collection to ensure high quality data collection, tracking and management

  • Organizes and leads orientation and training sessions in relation to data collection, data management, data analysis, and preparation of reports

  • Onboard, trains, and provides oversight of research students, research assistants, and volunteers

  • Assists in preparation of research grants, manuscripts, presentations, posters, reports and newsletters

  • Coordinates finances related to research projects – e.g. creates budgets and expenses spreadsheets, generates and submits invoices and works closely with the financial staff at BCCH

  • Designs and facilitates processes for communication and collaboration to support the research team and study sites

  • Coordinates with the GI team to ensure a proper workflow for recruitment, as well as facilitate both email and in-person screening of patients for future studies

  • Assists with drafting job descriptions, posting positions, and screening applicants

  • Performing light processing and shipping of biospecimens

  • Performing other related duties as required

 

It is expected that additional training may be required for some aspects of the work, and appropriate training will be provided as needed.

  

Consequence of Error/Judgement:

This research position requires the exercise of professional judgment, ethical guidance, and initiative in the conduct of various research projects. The ability to work collaboratively and exercise sound judgment is essential; and all work may be subject to review by the principal investigators and the GI division’s research leadership team. Failure to plan or follow up on initiatives and poor judgment or errors would have an adverse effect on the research productivity and operational management of the projects. An error within the realm of a research study may result in biased or incomplete data and skewed study results.

 

This position requires a high degree of confidentiality, diplomacy, and accuracy. Failure to act in a professional, tactful manner would have an adverse effect on the division, partner and community relations. Inadequate documentation, organization, communication, and planning may adversely affect the reputation of the division, and the credibility of individual investigators.

 

Supervision Received:

This research position will work under the guidance and direction of the GI division’s research leadership team as well as the division head. With appropriate autonomy, this research position will work collaboratively in performing defined duties from broad objectives and will alert the principal investigators to any unusual situations and problems as they arise or are anticipated. The principal investigators and the GI division’s research leadership team will provide training and ongoing consultation to support this position as needed.

 

Supervision Given:

This position will work closely with UBC, BCCHRI & PHSA staff and consultants, research personnel and students. This research position may include oversight and training of students, research assistants and volunteers.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline

  • Additional training in a related field and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Minimum of one year of experience working in clinical research

  • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own

  • Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion

 

Preferred Qualifications & Experience:

  • High degree of computer literacy with ability to use word processing, spreadsheet, internet and electronic mail applications at an intermediate level

  • Experience with REDCap and UBC RISe system for research ethics protocols is an asset

  • Familiarity with UBC admin procedures, financial policies and Workday system is an asset

  • Ability to take and transcribe accurate meeting minutes and follow up on action items with ease

  • Effective oral and written communication, interpersonal, and multi-tasking skills

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing

  • Ability to work both independently and within a team environment

  • Attentive to detail, with the ability to work quickly and accurately

  • Ability to exercise tact and discretion when handling sensitive and/or confidential matters
