Mercy Mental Health and Wellbeing Service (South West Area Mental Health Service) is a public mental health service supporting people in south west metropolitan Melbourne with severe and complex mental illnesses by providing acute and community-based care. Services are available to adults through acute inpatient programs, residential rehabilitation programs and crisis and community recovery-focused treatment programs. We also deliver inpatient and community specialist perinatal mental health services to women and infants in western Victoria.

About the opportunity

The Psychology Registrar Program at Mercy Mental Health and Wellbeing Service (MMH&WS) is a two-year training program that offers a diverse range of experiences for new graduate psychologists entering the workforce. You will benefit from the unique opportunity to immerse yourself in recovery-oriented, discipline-specific psychological practice in a public mental health setting in a supportive learning environment. The position is full time (including ADO) for a fixed term of 2 years, commencing February 2026.

The Registrar Program offers:

  • Diverse and comprehensive skill-building rotations across our adult inpatient, community and rehabilitative services, and our specialist perinatal inpatient / outpatient services.

  • The opportunity to develop a thorough understanding of the consumer journey through mental health services.

  • Opportunities to build competence and confidence as a psychologist within an enthusiastic and nurturing multidisciplinary team environment.

  • Reduced caseload to give time to focus on learning and development.

  • Ample opportunities to fulfil all the requirements of a Clinical Psychology Registrar program and subsequent endorsement as a Clinical Psychologist.

  • Regular supervision, opportunities for paid leave for professional development, protected study time, and peer consultation and support from other psychology registrars and psychologists working at MMH&WS.

Key responsibilities:

  • Knowledge of the discipline and understanding of case formulation in planning evidence-based treatment.

  • Provision of specialist psychological assessments, interventions, individual and group therapy, with a focus on recovery, person-centred care, and effective outcomes for adult consumers and their families.

  • Participation in individual and group supervision, and active commitment to professional development as per the requirements of the Psychology Board of Australia Psychology Registrar Program.

  • Active participation in multidisciplinary team meetings and contribution to formulation, diagnosis and treatment planning.

  • Promote a psychologically safe work environment and contribute to service improvement initiatives

  • Work within scope of practice, prioritise safety, wellbeing, and professional growth

What you’ll bring

To thrive in this role, you will have:

  • A minimum of a Master's Degree in Clinical Psychology in an APAC accredited postgraduate course.

  • Registration with AHPRA as a Psychologist with eligibility to enter a Registrar Program for Area of Practice endorsement in Clinical Psychology. We will accept applicants that expect to obtain general registration by the end of January 2026.

  • Commitment to working within a recovery-oriented framework, with a compassionate, flexible and positive approach to effective consumer care.

  • Excellent clinical, organisational, interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to adapt and problem solve.

  • The ability to nurture friendly, respectful relationships and contribute to a collaborative team environment.

You will also be required to provide evidence of, or in the process of obtaining:

  • A current Police Record Check and Working with Children Check.

  • Proof of current influenza vaccination and other vaccination status consistent with public health orders.
