Job Summary: The Clinical Pharmacy Supervisor has the responsibility to develop, organize & manage the Clinical Pharmacy Program with the assigned area(s) within the Medical Center. Has full responsibility to develop necessary services such as physician consultation, patient monitoring, patient counseling & medication management clinics within the ambulatory care framework including primary care & specialty clinics. Responsible to coordinate preceptor activities for pharmacy residents & students.

  • VA Careers - Pharmacy: https://youtube.com/embed/Fn_ickNBEws Indirect Patient Care Activities Establishes and expands the patient data base through interpreting the drug history, medical history, physical examination, and ongoing patient specific monitoring of therapy, with documentation in the formal patient medical record. Designs a therapeutic regimen or plan, based on patient-specific information, that includes establishing a therapeutic endpoint, electing an appropriate drug and related therapy, and establishing an appropriate dosage regime. Ability to communicate orally and in writing to persuade and influence clinical and management decisions. Review patient medication regimens for clinical effectiveness, drug selection, dosing, contraindications, side effects, potential drug interactions, and therapeutic outcomes as required. Communicates findings with prescribers and provides appropriate alternatives to current treatment plans as needed. Monitor and report drug errors, adverse drug reactions, allergies, and patient compliance issues. Documents findings per facility procedures. Works with providers to ensure compliance with national, VISN, and local initiatives. Supervisory and Administration Activities Supervise Clinical Pharmacist Practitioners, Clinical Pharmacy Technicians, and pharmacy residents. Actively participates in ensuring that resources dedicated to clinical pharmacy activities are used effectively and required workload data is gathered and collected in an accurate and timely manner. Interviews employee candidates and recommends appointments, advancements, or promotions to the appropriate approving official(s). Manages affirmative action initiatives, grievances, EEO complaints and labor management issues while effectively supervising staff. Assigns duties; development of performance standards, performance evaluation, and completing ongoing professional practice evaluations; recommendations for appointment, awards, advancement, and, when appropriate, disciplinary action. Responsible for managing booking, clinic utilization, and mapping of ambulatory/specialty clinics. Work Schedule: Rotational and includes weekends and holidays. Qualifications: Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Pharmacists must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d). Education 1. Graduate of an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) accredited College or School of Pharmacy with a baccalaureate degree in pharmacy (BS Pharmacy) and/or a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree. 2. Graduates of foreign pharmacy degree programs meet the educational requirement if the graduate is able to provide proof of achieving the Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Examination Commission (FPGEC) Certification, which includes passing the Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Examination (FPGEE) and the Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-Based Test (TOEFL IBT Licensure. Full, current and unrestricted license to practice pharmacy in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia. The pharmacist must maintain current registration if this is a requirement for maintaining full, current, and unrestricted licensure May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). All licensed pharmacists employed in VHA in this occupation on the effective date of this qualification standard are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the title, series and grade held, including positive education and licensure/certification/registration that are part of the basic requirements of the occupation. Grade Determinations: Pharmacy Supervisor, GS-13. Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities. Pharmacists assigned to this position must demonstrate the following KSAs: Ability to effectively supervise subordinate staff. Ability to communicate orally and in writing to persuade and influence clinical and management decisions. Expert understanding of regulatory and quality standards pertaining to pharmacy. Skill in managing people or programs. Assignments. Responsible for the professional and administrative management of an assigned area in pharmacy service, to include budgetary execution. Such individuals have responsibilities for supervising multiple pharmacists and technicians. Manages people, maintains effective interdepartmental relations, and cooperates with other services to accomplish the medical facility's mission and goals. Develops performance standards, assures that the program area is compliant with all regulatory and accrediting body requirements, designs and implements orientation and training programs for staff, and develops and maintains systems to monitor the performance of staff activities. Develops policies and procedures relative to their assigned area. Preferred Experience: Highly desirable for the candidates to have clinic management, supervisory skills, and direct patient care experiences and completion of an American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) accredited residency. Physical Requirements: The work may require regular and recurring physical exertion, involving standing for prolonged periods of time, lifting/carrying of pharmaceutical supplies weighing at least 50 lbs., and bending, stooping, and crawling.
