Clinical Medical Assistant/Patient Services Representative

The department is seeking to fill two positions that provide both clinical and administrative/front desk support to ensure smooth, patient-centered care and efficient clinic operations:
• Clinical Medical Assistant: While primarily focused on clinical responsibilities, such as obtaining medical and social histories, checking vital signs, administering injections, performing venipuncture, and supporting patient flow, this role also shares responsibility for front desk functions, including welcoming patients, scheduling, and ensuring accurate documentation.
• Medical Assistant/Patient Services Representative: While primarily focused on front-office and patient services—including scheduling, patient registration, insurance verification, payment collection, referral coordination, and maintenance of accurate records—this role also supports clinical operations as needed, such as assisting with patient flow and basic clinical tasks.

Both positions collaborate closely at the front desk and in the clinical setting, supporting the clinic’s integrated model of care and ensuring a welcoming, inclusive, and efficient experience for all patients and community members.

Salary & Benefits:

$34,000-$48,720, commensurate with experience.

Primary Duties

(Duties below apply to both roles; emphasis varies by assignment.)

  • Comply with all applicable regulations including HIPAA, CLIA, and OSHA.

  • Follow established clinical and administrative protocols as applicable to assigned focus area.

  • Accurately document patient interactions and medical information in the electronic medical record system.

  • Manage patient phone calls and messages as appropriate for scope of practice.

  • Perform daily patient flow and/or front-office duties, demonstrating the ability to multitask effectively in a fast-paced environment.

  • Safely administer injections and perform venipuncture.

  • Greet patients, verify insurance, collect payments, and process billing information.

  • Schedule, confirm, and follow up on patient appointments following established guidelines.

  • Coordinate patient referrals and assist with care coordination across providers and services.

  • Maintain accurate reports, patient statistics, and productivity data as requested.

  • Monitor schedules to ensure compliance with clinic guidelines and suggest improvements as needed.

  • Maintain appropriate levels of office and medical supplies.

  • Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and clinic community activities.

  • Provide care consistent with a patient-centered approach, identifying and addressing social determinants of health.

  • Mentor or precept students and volunteers assisting in any of these activities.

  • Demonstrates cultural humility, respect, and effectiveness in working with individuals from diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences, including patients, families, and interdisciplinary team members.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by leadership.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Graduate of an accredited medical assistant training program or equivalent experience in a healthcare setting.

  • Current Medical Assistant Certification in the State of Michigan.

  • One (1) year of experience in a healthcare or medical office setting, including use of electronic medical records, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with diverse populations.

  • Strong customer service orientation and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

  • Ability to handle patient and organizational information in a confidential manner.

  • Proficiency with Windows-based computer systems, including email, internet, and applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel.

  • Ability to perform detailed tasks with frequent interruptions and prioritize work effectively.

  • Ability to navigate ambiguity and the fast-paced, evolving realities of a college health center startup environment.

  • Ability and willingness to engage in continuous learning and professional growth.

  • Physical ability to perform the essential functions of the job, including frequent standing and walking and occasional bending, stooping, twisting, and lifting.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Vaccine and allergy injection management.

  • College health experience.

  • Bilingual proficiency (Spanish preferred).

Working Conditions:

Clinical office environment. Some travel may be required.
