Job Description

Summary

The Clinical Ideation Product Development Manager will lead early-stage product innovation and portfolio evaluation for proposed clinical innovation ideas. This role focuses on identifying unmet market and clinical needs, conducting rigorous competitive and financial analyses, and shaping product opportunities into clear business cases and prototype plans. In addition to driving new concept ideation, the role will assess existing products in the portfolio to recommend enhancements, re-designs, or retirement.

Accountable to execute Innovation & Ideation deliverables

  • Assess innovative ideas against unmet clinical and market needs through research, stakeholder engagement, and industry trend analysis.
  • Generate and prioritize a pipeline of product concepts aligned to clinical organization and enterprise strategy.
  • Conduct competitive intelligence and market analysis to assess emerging technologies, competitor pipelines, and potential disruptors.
  • Benchmark against best-in-class solutions to inform product differentiation strategies.
  • Facilitate structured ideation sessions and innovation workshops with clinical, commercial, and technical experts.
  • Defining clear problem statements and opportunity spaces rooted in evidence from the market, regulatory, and reimbursement landscapes.
  • Generate and prioritize a pipeline of product concepts aligned to organizational strategy.

Lead Business Case and Value Proposition Development

  • Build robust business cases for product concepts, including market opportunity sizing, competitive analysis, clinical value proposition, and financial metrics.
  • Define the clinical and economic value proposition for new product concepts, clearly articulating benefits to patients, providers, payers, and health systems.
  • Quantify the potential impact of proposed products on outcomes, efficiency, cost savings, or patient experience.
  • Ensure value propositions are evidence-based, leveraging clinical data, market insights, and stakeholder feedback.
  • Assess technical feasibility, regulatory pathways, and reimbursement considerations early in the process.
  • Evaluate build vs. buy vs. partner strategies for each concept, including acquisition of existing solutions, licensing, or co-development opportunities.
  • Partner with marketing, clinical, and health economics teams to test and refine messaging with target audiences and translate the value proposition into core elements of the business case, supporting both strategic prioritization and investment decisions.
  • Present business cases and clear recommendations (including build/buy/partner pathways) to senior leadership for investment decisions.

Develop Financial Models

  • Develop detailed financial models to support business cases, including revenue forecasts, cost projections, margin analysis, and ROI.
  • Assess funding needs for prototypes, pilots, and early development, balancing risk and return.
  • Partner with finance, Trade, and other economic partners to evaluate resource requirements, pricing assumptions, and revenue opportunities.
  • Provide input into portfolio-level financial prioritization by comparing projected value across initiatives.
  • Track early spending and investment against approved budgets for prototype or pilot phases.

Accountable for the Development Plan

  • Define high-level requirements and success criteria for concepts approved for prototyping or pilot or product built.
  • Assess feasibility of in-house development relative to external alternatives, factoring in speed-to-market, cost, regulatory requirements, and strategic alignment.
  • Partner with R&D, clinical, and design teams to scope prototypes and feasibility studies.
  • Ensure clear handoffs of validated concepts into the formal product development pipeline.

Manage Portfolio Assessment & Triage

  • Maintain visibility in the innovation funnel and communicate pipeline priorities to leadership.
  • Continuously evaluate existing clinical products and solutions to determine ongoing relevance, market fit, and clinical impact.
  • Conduct gap analyses against competitor offerings, regulatory changes, and evolving customer needs.
  • Partners with cross-functional teams, including EPP, to scope enhancements or redesigns that align with the product’s value proposition.
  • Recommend portfolio trade-offs and resource allocation for early-stage initiatives.

Education and/or Experience

BS/BA and 5+ years’ experience or equivalent combination of education and experience, and 2 years' of SME in respective areas.  MBA preferred.

Computer Skills

Proficiency in design and workflow tools, Excel.  Microsoft Office Suite required.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

RN/BSN preferred but not required for role

Other Skills and Abilities

  • Experience in product management, clinical innovation, or healthcare strategy, with proven experience in early-stage product development.
  • Strong understanding of healthcare market dynamics, clinical workflows, and regulatory considerations.
  • Demonstrated ability to create and present compelling business cases.
  • Proven history of demonstrated ability to conduct strategic analysis, market assessments, and financial modeling.
  • Excellent collaboration, facilitation, and communication skills.

Work Location

This position works on-site at the San Diego Headquarters or other company location (or from a remote location with management approval based on business requirements). Must provide adequate support to internal clients; be available for regular interactions and coordination of work with other employees, colleagues, clients, or vendors; as well as be available to facilitate effective decisions through collaboration with stakeholders.

Working Hours

This is an exempt level position requiring the incumbent to work the hours required to fully accomplish job responsibilities and reasonable meet deadlines for work deliverables. The individual must have the flexibility to work beyond traditional hours and be able to work nights, weekends or on holidays as required.  Work hours may be changed from time to time to meet the needs of the business.  Typical core business hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 5:00pm.
