Macquarie University Health is seeking an accomplished and visionary clinician to step into the role of Clinical Director, Anaesthetics and Perioperative Services. This is a unique opportunity to provide strategic clinical leadership within a dynamic, academically integrated healthcare environment where excellence in patient care, education and research converge.

Reporting to the Clinical Program Head, Critical Care and Anaesthetics, you will drive the clinical governance, quality and innovation agenda for the Anaesthetics Discipline across Macquarie University Hospital and Clinics. As a senior clinical leader, you will champion improved models of care, foster interdisciplinary collaboration, and translate cutting-edge research into evidence-based practice — all while nurturing the next generation of clinicians and researchers.

This is a part-time (0.1 FTE), 2-year fixed-term appointment ideally suited to an experienced anaesthetist who is passionate about leadership, governance and advancing the integration of clinical care, teaching and discovery.

About the Role

As Clinical Director, Anaesthetics and Perioperative Services, you will be responsible for:

  • Providing strategic clinical leadership and management for Anaesthetics and Perioperative Services, including implementing and overseeing a robust governance structure for the Discipline.

  • Managing and delivering upon performance across clinical care, teaching and research in line with agreed KPIs.

  • Overseeing clinical governance activities including clinical audits, quality review meetings, morbidity and mortality reviews, and incident and risk management.

  • Monitoring clinical performance data to identify and implement opportunities for continuous improvement.

  • Supporting and developing the anaesthetics leadership group to ensure formalised and effective governance of the service.

  • Championing the adoption of improved models of care and enhancements to clinical practice for the benefit of patients.

  • Facilitating the translation of research into evidence-based practices and driving the application of research findings to improve patient care and health outcomes.

  • Fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and integration of discovery, clinical and translational research.

  • Championing and overseeing participation in student and junior doctor teaching and development programs.

  • Actively managing the performance of accredited anaesthetics practitioners and advising on the suitability of applicants for appointment to the Hospital and University.

  • Developing models to support the introduction of trainee or accredited positions within the Discipline.

  • Anticipating future workforce challenges and proactively addressing capability gaps aligned to the Macquarie University Health Clinical Services Plan.

About You

You are a highly experienced and FANZCA-qualified anaesthetist with a proven record of clinical excellence, leadership and a genuine commitment to governance, education and research. You thrive in collaborative, multidisciplinary environments and are energised by the opportunity to shape the strategic direction of a clinical discipline within an academically integrated health precinct.

Selection Criteria

  • Registration with the Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA) with MBBS or equivalent qualification and Fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (FANZCA).

  • Eligibility to be an active Accredited Practitioner of MQ Health.

  • Record of sustained accomplishments, significant clinical practical experience and evidence of leadership and/or innovation in Anaesthetics and/or Perioperative Services.

  • Demonstrated commitment to education and research within a clinical setting.

  • Experience working in, and playing a leadership role in, a high-performing multidisciplinary team.

  • Demonstrated commitment to clinical governance and promoting a culture of safety, quality, innovation and best practice in clinical practice, teaching and research.

  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) and experience leading and implementing change.
