A Glimpse of the Job

The Civil Rights Case Manager, under general supervision, plays a critical role in the university’s response to allegations of discrimination or harassment based on a protected class, including sexual assault and sexual harassment.  The Case Manager reviews all incoming reports and provides (1) objective information about a party’s rights, (2) compassionate and appropriate support and resources, and (3) options for resolving the complaint through the University’s formal or informal processes.  The Civil Rights Case Manager supports the University’s mission to create and maintain a university environment that is free from discrimination, harassment, and retaliation.

Essential Duties/Tasks

Case Management

  • Triages reports of discrimination, harassment, and/or related retaliation and provides a prompt, compassionate, and appropriate response

  • Conducts intake meetings, offers resolution options, facilitates academic and supportive resources, and communicates about a party’s rights in the university process

  • Provides support and resources to parties during the formal investigation process 

  • Provides status updates to the parties throughout the selected complaint resolution process (formal or informal)

  • Maintains confidentiality to the extent allowed by federal regulations, state laws and university policies

  • Ensures timely and accurate documentation of all reports and University responses

  • Collaborates with a variety of campus partners (housing, academic officials, financial aid, etc.) to coordinate support services and eliminate roadblocks

  • Refers students to university and community resources, as appropriate

 

Training and Campus Outreach

  • Engages in continuous learning to Title IX, Title VII, VAWA, and related civil rights regulations, state laws, and University policies

  • Delivers training and education programs for the university community

  • Promotes an environment that fosters relationships and creates unbiased opportunities for contributions through ideas, words, and actions that uphold our values

  • Represents the department at special events, community functions, and University trainings

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Three years of related experience in case management

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in related field (social work, criminal justice or law, human resources, education, etc.)

  • Previous experience in higher education

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to establish rapport and communicate with students, faculty, and staff from various cultural, social, educational and economic backgrounds

  • Skilled in communicating with tact, diplomacy, discretion, and professionalism

  • Skilled is organizing, prioritizing, and managing multiple tasks and records in a high volume, fast-paced environment with attention to detail, flexibility and appropriate discretion

  • Able to objectively gather and record relevant information into a well-organized file

  • Knowledge of relevant state and federal civil rights laws

  • Ability to adapt to constantly changing legal landscape

  • Can work as part of a team

  • Able to maintain confidentiality with private or sensitive information

  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications with an emphasis on Word, excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint

  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and manage multiple tasks and data in a high volume, fast-paced environment with accuracy, attention to detail, flexibility, confidentiality, empathy, positivity, and compassion

  • Knowledge of best practices in higher education compliance with respect to effectively addressing discrimination, harassment, and retaliation

  • Can act independently, take initiative, and exercise sound judgment

  • Able to multi-task and work cooperatively with others

  • This position is security sensitive

  • This position requires compliance with state and federal laws/codes and Texas A&M University System/TAMU policies, regulations, rules and procedures
