Dow has an exciting opportunity available for a Civil Engineer located at our facility in Houston, TX.

About you and this role:

Provides specialized technical support and solutions for project teams, operations and maintenance. Understands and implements Most Effective Technology (MET), work process, tools and industry best practices within their discipline. The Hardware Disciplines within Engineering and Maintenance are comprised of the following disciplines: Buildings, Civil, Electrical, Instrument, Materials, Mechanical, Process Containment Equipment and Piping. Hardware Disciplines support both projects and technical support teams as an engineer on large projects or lead for their discipline on small/intermediate projects. Requires conceptual knowledge of theories, techniques and methodology within the analytical technology discipline.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the responsible engineer for the assigned discipline scope, encompassing structural steel, concrete foundations, building envelope (MEP), piling, pipe supports, paving, grading, and drainage.
  • Apply discipline work processes and best practices to the assigned scope.
  • Ensure adherence to applicable design codes, Dow design criteria, applicable MET, and LPPs.
  • Provide engineering inputs to designers and review 3D models and construction deliverables to ensure alignment with engineering input.
  • Ensure the quality of produced deliverables by validating constructability, checking designs based on inputs from other disciplines, and developing designs with an "owner's mindset".
  • Manage the assigned scope of work by ensuring adequate definition and documentation of project scope, availability, and sufficiency of layout and equipment information for design. Advocate for a no-change mentality and communicate any necessary scope changes to the lead engineer through PDNs.
  • Monitor bulk quantities in line with the authorization estimate and observe scope growth, informing the lead engineer of any changes.
  • Validate the assigned scope for potential interferences with existing infrastructure using existing drawings, laser scans, and site visits as required.
  • Coordinate with other disciplines to progress and finalize design deliverables.
  • Document risks within the assigned scope and escalate them to the lead engineer, such as missing or inadequate information.
  • Participate in model reviews and team checks as determined by the project lead.
  •  Support construction activities by providing clarifications and technical support, such as responding to RFIs and reviewing shop drawings as needed.
  • Assist in the archival of design documentation for the assigned scope.
  • For projects requiring a PE stamp, serve as the Responsible Engineer if necessary

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering is required.
  • 2 years of industry experience preferred.
  • A minimum requirement for this U.S. based position is the ability to work legally in the United States.  No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position, including for any type of U.S. permanent residency (green card) process.

Able to meet the following physical demands of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation:

Your Skills:

  • Project Leadership Skills: Ability to facilitate cross functionally a coordinated effort to accomplish a project.  To identify steps to milestones needed to accomplish the goals of a project.  Examples: Identifying the actions needed to meet an LPP standard in the facility and leading a small team to implement the actions. 
  • Technical Skills: Ability to learn basic chemistry and apply knowledge to assist in troubleshooting quality issues.  Understanding of basic process technology: pumps, instrumentation, distillation, etc.
  • Prioritization: The ability to assess all of the potential areas of focus, and able to prioritize what the organization is in most need of to meet key deadlines.  Focus on urgent when needed, and also ability to be proactive for important/non-urgent activities. 
  • Communication: Strategic communication management is the control of communication in and out of an organization to promote the clear exchange of information and ideas.
  • Accountability: Accountability is the acknowledgment and assumption of responsibility for actions, products, decisions, and policies including the administration, governance, and implementation within the scope of the role.
  • Critical Thinking: Critical thinking is the evaluation of facts to form a judgment by using the rational, data-based analysis of factual evidence.
