Position Title: Children’s Specialist Practitioner 
Classification: SCHADS Level 6 
Location: Noosa Family Violence service / Sunshine Coast Violence services 
Status: Part-Time – Maximum Term (30.4 hours per week)

Why this role matters

The Salvation Army (Salvos) provides a wide range of services that support women and women with children impacted by family and domestic violence. We offer accommodation, counselling, support, behavioural programs, and advice to women and children at risk of, experiencing or escaping family violence. Our services focus on prevention, restoration, and healing to provide specialised support to address immediate safety issues and provide advice, referrals, and connection to assist the recovery journey.

The Role 

The Children’s Specialist Practitioner is responsible for coordinating and delivering a high-quality, integrated assessment and support program for children and young people engaged with The Salvation Army’s Family Violence Services (FVS). 

This specialist position focuses on: 

  • Coordinating and delivering child-focused therapeutic interventions and group programs for infants, children, and their mothers, to focus on the children’s voice.  

  • Provide specialist child-focused education and authoritative direction to staff to ensure child focussed practice is performed to meet the needs of children and their mothers accessing FVS programs.  

  • Delivering specialist support to children (0–18 years) and their mothers who have experienced family violence. Engaging children, through play assessing for development and cognitive milestones and referring as appropriate to therapeutic supports, to reduce the impact of family violence related trauma.  

  • Addressing the unique risks family violence poses to children and promoting their safety and wellbeing.  

  • Working collaboratively with internal teams and external service providers to ensure an integrated continuum of care and support. 

How You Will Make an Impact 

  • Provide therapeutic and group-based interventions to support children affected by family violence. 

  • Engage children through play to assess developmental and cognitive milestones, and refer to therapeutic supports as required to address trauma impacts. 

  • Participate in joint home visits with case managers to support family assessments and case planning. 

  • Conduct child-specific risk assessments, develop safety plans, and manage risks in partnership with mothers and families. 

  • Offer secondary consultation and expert direction to staff on child-related risk and trauma matters. 

  • Advocate for and uphold the voice of the child in matters relating to Family Law and Child Protection. 

  • Provide accurate, up-to-date, and accessible information and resources to families. 

 

What You Will Bring 

  • Degree qualification in Social Work, Welfare (Social Sciences), Community Development, or a related field. 

  • Membership and registration with a recognised professional body (e.g. AASW, APS, ACA). 

  • Demonstrated experience working with children and families impacted by trauma and family violence. 

  • Proven experience supporting women and children who have experienced family violence. 

  • Current Working with Children Check (QLD Blue Card) and compliance with all relevant child protection requirements. 

  • Current Queensland Driver Licence.
