POSITION SUMMARY
The Chief Technologist is a key member of the executive leadership team, responsible for shaping and executing IGEN’s technology vision and strategy. This role leads the development, delivery, and continuous improvement of our SaaS platform and products, ensuring they are scalable, secure, and aligned with business objectives.
The Chief Technologist drives innovation, fosters a high-performing engineering culture, and partners closely with cross-functional teams to deliver exceptional value to customers. This leader is accountable for the technical roadmap, architecture, and operational excellence, while championing best practices and emerging technologies to maintain IGEN’s competitive edge in the market.
The ideal location for this role is Appleton, WI (relocation assistance provided). We are open to hybrid or remote work locations given relevancy of candidate experience.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Tech and Engineering Leadership:
- Lead the tech and engineering function, overseeing all aspects of product development lifecycle, R&D, and technology innovation. This includes key initiatives such as holistic product development and scaling the core technology platform that supports multiple products.
Strategic Technology Leadership:
- Serve as a key member of IGEN’s executive leadership team, providing visionary direction and oversight across all areas of technology, including software development, infrastructure, and data management. Provide executive sponsorship for critical technology projects and communicate progress to stakeholders.
Technology Strategy Development:
- Develop and implement a forward-looking technology strategy and roadmap that aligns with the company’s vision and growth objectives. Ensure scalability, efficiency, and continuous innovation across all technology platforms, including core products, content distribution, and third-party integrations (e.g., e-commerce platforms, tax providers, ERP), and evolving product lines.
Strategic Communication Across Stakeholders:
- Effectively communicates the technical roadmap and technical capabilities across all stakeholder groups: Clients, partners, Board of Directors, senior leadership team, and cross-functional teams across the organization to ensure clarity and shared understanding. Communicate the technical roadmap across the organization through regular updates, collaborative workshops, and alignment meetings.
Infrastructure Management:
- Oversee the management and optimization of IGEN’s technology infrastructure, ensuring the reliability, security, and scalability of servers, networks, databases, and cloud services. Develop and implement processes and best practices for monitoring, maintaining, and improving platform and product performance and reliability.
Team Management and Development:
- Build and lead a high-performing technology team, fostering a culture of engineering excellence, collaboration, innovation, continuous improvement, and process optimization. Mentor and develop team members, driving their professional growth.
Technology Research and Innovation:
- Stay ahead of industry trends and emerging technologies, assessing their potential impact on IGEN’s offerings. Lead the evaluation & adoption of cutting-edge technologies to enhance the company’s competitive edge.
Vendor and Partner Management:
- Manage relationships with key technology vendors and partners, ensuring strong collaboration and the successful execution of service level agreements.
Security and Compliance:
- Champion the implementation of robust security measures and best practices, safeguarding the company’s data and systems. Ensure compliance with relevant regulations and industry standards.
Cross-functional Collaboration:
- Collaborate closely with other departments, including Product Management, Sales, and Customer Success, to ensure technology initiatives support business goals and deliver value to customers. Work closely with the Product Management team to prioritize a balance of technical and functional development.
Cost Management and Optimization:
- Strategically manage technology resources to maximize efficiency and cost-effectiveness, while ensuring the organization is equipped to support ongoing operations and future growth.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
- 10+ years of experience in engineering, technology, or product development leadership roles.
- Experience with transitioning legacy applications to a modern cloud-native approach with proven demonstration of leading the effort
- Proven track record as a senior technology leader, ideally as a CTO or VP of Engineering in a growth-stage B2B SaaS company.
- Highly technical background with a deep understanding of software development, infrastructure, and agile methodologies.
- Demonstrated ability to work closely with executive leadership, contributing to strategy development and value creation.
- Deep knowledge of emerging technologies and industry trends, with the ability to evaluate and implement them effectively.
- Strong ability to make data-driven decisions and solve complex technical challenges.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders with an ability to articulate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and inspire a team.
Preferred:
- Experience in modernizing a legacy client-server application to the cloud
- Experience in tax or compliance technology
- Experience with ERP integrations
