The Chief Financial Officer will be a highly credible, mission‑driven financial leader with the judgment, presence, and strategic orientation required to steward a complex, integrated safety‑net health system. This leader will bring the ability to balance rigor and discipline with pragmatism and creativity, operating effectively in an environment shaped by public accountability, constrained resources, and multiple stakeholder interests. The CFO will be comfortable navigating ambiguity, addressing competing priorities, and translating financial insight into clear, actionable guidance that informs decision‑making at the executive and board levels. Equally important, the ideal candidate will be a collaborative partner to clinical, administrative, and operational leaders across Denver Health—someone who builds trust, communicates with clarity, and anchors financial leadership in service of the organization’s mission, community impact, and long‑term sustainability.

Job Summary

The CFO oversees strategic financial goals for the organization and develops and executes on related plans. Responsible for the fiscal functions for all components of Denver Health including the development, interpretation, coordination, and administration of organizational policy. Areas reporting include Accounting, Budget, Capital Development, the Denver Health Medical Plan (DHMP), Payroll, Revenue Cycle, Reimbursement, and Banking/Treasury Management. Collaborates with the CEO and Executive Staff in determining the strategic direction of the organization within the parameters and mission of Denver Health and carries responsibility for executing a financial plan in support of the strategic plan. The CFO manages, directs, plans and coordinates the functions and activities of assigned areas; serves as a member of the Executive Staff team and collaborates with Administrative, Medical and Operational Leadership.


Essential Functions:

  • Provides direction and mentoring to ACFO and Director-level staff for areas of responsibility. (15%)
  • Directs all accounting functions, including production of timely and accurate monthly financial statements and the annual audit. (5%)
  • Maintains ultimate responsibility for the annual budgeting process and interim budgeting activities. (5%)
  • Generates data and analysis in support of management decision making such as cost accounting, budget reports and analysis, and labor productivity and benchmarking reports and analysis. (5%)
  • Understands federal, state and local legislative and policymaking activities that have a financial impact to the organization and develops optimization strategies to address impacts. (5%)
  • Oversees all Revenue Cycle functions, including enrollment (Medical Assistance site) registration/admissions, hospital and physician coding and billing, payer contracting and medical records. (5%)
  • Oversees major contracts such as the Medical Assistance site contract with the State of Colorado and the nursing facility affiliation agreement. (5%)
  • Provides Executive oversight over the Denver Health Medical Plan (DHMP) via direct reporting relationship of the CEO of DHMP to the CFO. (5%)
  • Chairs the Capital Development/Real Estate Committee and oversees the financial aspects of all real estate acquisition and divestiture. Supports and/or serves on subsidiary organizations or other related Denver Health entities. Develops and maintains the financial plan to support the regular review of the facilities’ capital development. (5%)
  • Serves as member of and staffs the Finance, Audit and Compliance Committee (FAC). Serves as member of the DHMP FAC, DHMP Board (Treasurer), DH Foundation Finance Committee member and officer of several boards for various property holding companies. (5%)
  • Advises on the implementation of strategic plans and initiatives for Denver Health. Develops a financial plan in support of the strategic plan. (5%)
  • Maintains effective relationships and open communication with patients, families, staff, contractors and the community. (5%)
  • Attends formal educational classes as required by Denver Health. Pursues learning opportunities to enhance performance. (5%)
  • Drives a culture of process and performance improvement through the use of Lean and other tools. (5%)
  • Leads special projects, such as joint ventures and operational excellence initiatives. (5%)
  • Enhances employee engagement by providing the resources, support and tools to promote efficiency, innovation and teamwork. (5%)
  • Mentors, guides and coaches direct reports in order to expand their capabilities and build management depth in the organization for succession planning. (5%)
  • Staffs, trains, advises, evaluates the performance of, and when necessary, disciplines and/or discharges staff at multiple levels. (5%)


Education:

  • Master's Degree In Accounting, Finance, or related field (Required)

or

  • Bachelor's Degree In Accounting or Finance + Post Graduate Diploma or Certificate Program Certified Publica Accountant (CPA) (Required)


Work Experience:

  • 10+ years of experience as sitting CFO in a complex, non-profit and/or safety net healthcare system (Required)


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Communication skills to interact effectively with Denver Health’s current service/client base, prospective customers, and all levels of Denver Health management.
  • The ability to understand apply and teach financial management concepts including forecasting, assist exploring strategic options and develop creative solutions to complex government and business issues.
  • The ability to interpret and analyze financial and statistical information.
  • The ability to systematically gather information from a variety of sources, analyze information, identify implications of data, draw appropriate conclusions, generate viable alternative solutions to a question or problem and evaluate the consequences of choosing each alternative.
  • Special skills required include business acumen, strategic planning, LEAN processes improvement, organization assessment, highly developed leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Skill in resource utilization, policy development, quality assurance, and an in-depth understanding of clinical business and financial functions.
  • Microsoft Office skills required.
