About us

We’re on an exciting journey to transform our Group and the way we’re shaping finance for good. We’re focusing on the future, investing in our technologies, workplaces, and colleagues to make our Group a great place for everyone. Including you!

About this opportunity

As the Group continues its ongoing strategic transformation, LBG has created a new function to identify, develop, and deliver new opportunities in Horizons 2 and 3. This new function works across siloes and domains, accelerating the delivery of innovations that will shape our future.

As part of that team, we are looking for a visionary and hands‑on technology leader to be our Chief Engineer for Group Innovation. The role is accountable for identifying, exploring, and defining how emerging technologies can be applied to transform how the Group operates, unlock new opportunities, and deliver exceptional customer and colleague experiences. This is a rare opportunity to shape a new team and influence how technology is used across the Group’s biggest innovation bets, combining experimentation and invention with the scale, reach, and purpose of the UK’s largest retail bank.

You’ll play a pivotal role in shaping where the Group places its most important innovation investments, informing priorities and helping define the engineering vision for innovation. You’ll bring curiosity, ambition, and strong technical judgement to ensure ideas are developed into practical, scalable outcomes.

Alongside this strategic influence, you’ll lead engineering teams to rapidly prototype and validate innovative solutions, taking ideas from early‑stage experimentation through to evidence-backed designs that are ready to scale into production. This role requires strong architectural judgement and the ability to create solutions that deliver value, reduce complexity, and improve how the organisation operates.

This is a senior leadership role for someone with a deep passion for engineering and emerging technology. If you thrive in ambiguity, are motivated by building new things in complex environments, and want to drive change that can impact millions, this is your opportunity to help shape the future of banking.

What You’ll Do

  • Set the engineering and technology direction for Group Innovation, shaping how emerging technologies are applied to deliver the Group’s most important innovation bets.

  • Translate new and emerging technologies into practical solutions that inform investment, build, and scale decisions.

  • Own end‑to‑end solution architecture across innovation initiatives, from early experimentation through to designs and patterns validated as ready for production scale.

  • Lead and guide venture teams to rapidly prototype, making critical technical decisions to ensure solutions are validated for scalability and alignment to enterprise standards.

  • Define and promote engineering standards, architectural principles, and guardrails that enable rapid experimentation without creating downstream risk or complexity.

  • Work across Group platform and domain teams to ensure toolchains, environments, and integrations support effective innovation delivery.

  • Act as a senior engineering voice for Group Innovation, sharing patterns, lessons learned, and outcomes to raise engineering capability across the Group.

  • Ensure innovation initiatives deliver measurable outcomes, including revenue growth, cost reduction, productivity improvement, and simplification of legacy systems where appropriate.

What you’ll need

  • Visionary engineering leader who combines curiosity, ambition, and strong technical judgement, able to balance speed, quality, resilience, and cost.

  • Deep technologist with a passion for emerging technologies and how they can be applied in real‑world, regulated environments.

  • Hands‑on experience applying AI‑enabled capabilities in real‑world systems, using AI to re‑imagine how products are built, operated, and scaled.

  • Comfort operating in ambiguity, shaping direction where answers are not yet clear.

  • Organisational influencing skills, able to build trust with senior stakeholders, platform teams, and delivery leaders.

  • Pragmatic innovator with experience working in or alongside startup, scale‑up, or innovation‑led environments, motivated by building new solutions, modernising existing systems, and learning through experimentation.

Useful Experience

  • Senior experience in engineering, architecture, or technology leadership roles.

  • Career background as a software engineer and/or technical architect, with progression into leadership.

  • Experience operating within large‑scale or regulated organisations, working effectively with governance, risk, and control functions.

  • A track record of simplifying complex technology landscapes or reducing technical debt.
