Chief Development Officer
Position Overview
A mission-driven nonprofit organization focused on expanding access to safe, affordable housing and strengthening communities across Los Angeles County is seeking a strategic and relationship-oriented Chief Development Officer (CDO). This executive will lead all fundraising and resource development efforts, building a sustainable and diversified revenue model to support long-term impact.
The CDO will serve as a key member of the executive leadership team and play a central role in shaping organizational strategy, elevating the organization’s visibility, and deepening engagement with donors, partners, and stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities of the Chief Development Officer
Strategic Leadership & Planning
- Design and implement a comprehensive development strategy aligned with organizational priorities and growth goals
- Partner with the CEO and board leadership to position philanthropy as a core driver of mission success
- Identify new funding opportunities and innovative revenue streams to expand impact
Fundraising & Revenue Growth
- Oversee all aspects of fundraising, including major gifts, institutional giving, corporate partnerships, and special initiatives
- Cultivate, solicit, and steward high-level donors and prospects, with a focus on building long-term relationships
- Lead efforts to secure significant philanthropic investments that support both programs and organizational capacity
Board & External Engagement
- Work closely with the Board of Directors to strengthen fundraising engagement and governance support
- Serve as an external ambassador, representing the organization in the community and with key stakeholders
- Build strategic partnerships that enhance visibility and resource development opportunities
Team Leadership & Operations
- Lead, mentor, and grow a high-performing development team, fostering a culture of accountability and collaboration
- Establish clear performance metrics and systems to track progress toward fundraising goals
- Ensure effective use of data and technology to support donor engagement and decision-making
Communications & Brand Alignment
- Collaborate with communications and program teams to ensure consistent, compelling messaging
- Strengthen the organization’s case for support by clearly articulating its impact and vision
- Elevate storytelling efforts to inspire donor investment and community engagement
Qualifications of the Chief Development Officer
- Master's degree in business administration, marketing, public relations or related
- At least 10 years of related experience
- Strong leadership skills with experience building and managing teams
- Exceptional relationship-building abilities with diverse stakeholders, including donors, board members, and community leaders
- Strategic thinker with the ability to translate vision into actionable plans
