TRIUMF's diverse community of nearly 600 multidisciplinary researchers, engineers, technicians, tradespeople, staff, and students create a unique incubator for Canadian excellence, as well as a portal to premier global collaborations.  Fueling innovation and improving lives, we are committed to accelerating discovery and shaping a better world.

Equity, diversity, and inclusion are integral to excellence and enhance our ability to create knowledge and opportunity for all. Together, we are committed to building an inclusive culture that encourages, supports, and celebrates the voices of our employees, students, partners, and the people and communities we serve.

TRIUMF’s student program typically hires ~40 students each term from across all disciplines who hang together socially and professionally during the term, and beyond. Our program offers young minds a chance to gather, learn, make new friends, and have fun doing so during their time at TRIUMF. We hold weekly ProD sessions for students which include different activities such as conflict resolution, emotional intelligence, critical thinking, and active listening. Additionally, we hold weekly seminars about the different experiments at TRIUMF, and these talks specifically cater to students. Located on the UBC campus makes it easier for students to make friends, create memories, and explore Vancouver all while working at TRIUMF.

TRIUMF’s student program is more than just a place to work, its learning, memories, friendships, exploration, and development all clubbed into one.

Come join us to see how we are working to unlock the mysteries of the universe and shape the future. Apply now and be part of our extraordinary journey.

TRIUMF’s Life Sciences Division is seeking an undergraduate chemistry student to contribute to pioneering research in radiopharmaceuticals for cancer imaging and therapy as part of a collaborative project with the University of Alberta. The student will join the synthetic effort to develop a novel radiotracer aimed at targeting a broad spectrum of cancers, including late-stage metastatic types, using advanced radioisotopes with strong clinical potential. This role offers an exceptional opportunity to work within one of the world’s leading radiopharmaceutical research environments, surrounded by experts in nuclear medicine and radiochemistry. Through this high-impact research, the student will gain hands-on experience in radiotracer development for emerging therapeutic targets with the potential to transform cancer treatment worldwide.

The successful candidate will contribute to the development of radiotracers for cancer imaging and therapy by supporting the purification and characterization of synthetic intermediates and radiotracer precursors. The primary focus of the role will be the use of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for purification and analysis, as well as structural characterization using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy.

Working under the supervision of TRIUMF scientists, the student will help ensure the identity, purity, and quality of compounds used in radiotracer development. The position will involve planning and executing analytical workflows, interpreting spectroscopic and chromatographic data, and maintaining detailed experimental records. Depending on project progress, the candidate may also gain exposure to fluorine-18 radiochemistry and radiotracer preparation.

This role provides hands-on experience in analytical and synthetic chemistry within a multidisciplinary radiopharmaceutical research environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform purification and analytical characterization of synthetic intermediates and radiotracer precursors using HPLC.

  • Conduct NMR characterization of compounds and assist in interpretation of spectral data.

  • Maintain detailed experimental records and assist in organizing analytical data.

  • Support synthetic chemistry activities related to radiotracer precursor development.

  • Assist with preparation of samples and materials used in radiotracer development studies.

  • Contribute to internal presentations or reports summarizing analytical results.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate chemistry program or related field.

  • Foundational knowledge in organic chemistry and and characterization methods.

  • Familiarity with analytical techniques such as HPLC, NMR, or related instrumentation is an asset.

  • Strong organizational and analytical skills with attention to experimental documentation.

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a research team under the supervision of senior scientists.

  • Demonstrated interest in analytical chemistry, medicinal chemistry, or radiopharmaceutical research.

Skills to be gained

  • Analytical Chemistry Skills: Hands-on experience with HPLC purification/analysis and NMR spectroscopy for compound characterization.

  • Chemical Data Interpretation: Experience analyzing chromatographic and spectroscopic data to confirm compound identity and purity.

  • Radiopharmaceutical Research Exposure: Insight into the workflow of radiotracer development and, potentially, fluorine-18 radiochemistry.

  • Research Communication: Practice summarizing experimental results through reports and presentations.

Nuclear Energy Worker

The incumbent will be required to successfully complete the TRIUMF in-house radiation safety training course and be designated as a TRIUMF Nuclear Energy Worker.

Skills required:

Analytical Chemistry, Chemistry, Data Interpretations, Medicinal Chemistry, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (NMR), Organic Chemistry, Researching, Teamwork
