The Position

At Roche, we believe that doing now what patients need next requires not just innovation in science, but excellence in how we operate. We are looking for a visionary Chapter Lead for Legal & Ethics to join our Australian leadership community.

As an extended member of the Leadership Team (ET) for strategic topics, the Legal & Ethics Chapter Lead will be the architect of our ethical culture. This is a role for a collaborative leader who moves beyond traditional legal advisory to act as a catalyst for innovation and a coach for our people.

What you will be working on:

As the Legal & Ethics Chapter Lead, your primary mission is to co-create strategies that secure Roche Australia’s future while fostering an environment where ethical decision-making is internalized. You will build and survey future trends in legal and compliance, ensuring we stay ahead of evolving regulations. As a Chapter Lead, you are responsible for the growth and development of your chapter team members, maintaining a world-class pool of talent to support our squads and communities in delivering on our long-term priorities.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to.

  • Strategic Leadership: Acting as an extended ET member, providing strategic legal and compliance counsel to shape the future of Roche Australia.

  • Collaborative Partnering: Working as a Catalyst and Visionary across the organization to co-create business strategies.

  • QMS Implementation: Leading the local implementation of the Quality Management System (QMS), prioritizing simplification and efficiency.

  • Compliance Oversight: Serving as the designated Compliance Officer, ensuring adherence to local healthcare and corporate regulations.

  • Risk & Opportunity Management: Proactively identifying and managing risks while seeking out opportunities to move the business forward safely.

  • Audit & Inspection Readiness: Leading the affiliate’s preparedness for audits and ensuring the completion of any corrective and preventive action (CAPA) plans.

  • People Development: Coaching and mentoring chapter members to lift the performance of the group and help individuals reach their full potential.

  • Ethical Culture Building: Designing programs that empower employees to be authentic, own their impact, and accept responsibility for their decisions.

  • Resource Allocation: Managing a ready pool of legal and ethics talent to be deployed across various high-impact squads and workstreams.

  • Contract Management: Overseeing the development and management of corporate contracts to ensure business agility and protection.

  • Agency Engagement: Interacting with external regulatory bodies and legal partners to represent Roche Australia’s interests.

  • Healthcare Compliance: Acting as Compliance Officer and guiding the organization through complex GCP/GVP/GPP guidelines and pharmaceutical industry standards.

Who you are:

You are a qualified legal professional with:

  • An undergraduate degree in law and are admitted as a legal practitioner in New South Wales.

  • Extensive post-admission experience, ideally gained within a top-tier law firm or a corporate environment.

  • A strong background in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or life sciences industry.

  • Prior experience in managing and developing high-performing teams.

  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in a "VACC" (Visionary, Architect, Catalyst, Coach) leadership model and prefer collaboration over hierarchy.

  • 3+ years or equivalent of experience in Compliance or Audit-related functions.

  • A proven track record in Risk & Opportunity management and the ability to make choices in the best interest of the organization.

  • Learning agility who seeks out new ideas, technologies, and perspectives rather than accepting the status quo.

  • Deep respect for diverse cultures and values, thriving in an international and inclusive environment.

  • Expertise in dealing constructively with resistance and can articulate complex legal requirements into simple, actionable business advice.
