Chapter Lead Data Science

CDR (Amsterdam - Cedar) Full time

With your home base in Amsterdam, you will be a mentor for the data scientists in your “chapter” and will have up to 8 data scientists reporting to you directly. You will lead them by example. To be able to do this, you need to be a senior and strong data scientist yourself. You will work yourself as a data scientist in a long-term project. You are responsible for assuring the delivery of high-quality analysis results in all our projects. You ensure that the team provides insights and perspectives to decision-makers to facilitate decision-making in a way that meets internal and external requirements. 

Besides that, very importantly, you develop the craftmanship and capability of the individual data scientists in the team, and the team as a whole. You provide quality assurance of analysis results, analysis documentation, analysis code that may run in production. You serve as a liaison to business departments and the risk/audit department. Most importantly, you have to be a mentor for the data scientists. You are expected to be able to mentor even our most senior data scientists on technical topics.

Roles and responsibilities 

The Data Scientist in your team, including yourself, are responsible for scoping, developing, validating, and documenting machine learning-based solutions which form the core of products which INGA-WB develops for ING. This also includes carrying out world-class Research and Development where appropriate to arrive at a solution. 

Besides being a team lead, as a data science lead your main focus will be on: 

  • Oversee the direction setting and vision of multiple Data Science projects. 

  • Mentor, grow, and evaluate a team of junior and senior Data Scientists 

  • Be responsible for Quality Assurance of all DS models, helping ensure they pass our stringent internal Model Validation checks prior to going into production. 

  • Lead the upskilling and knowledge sharing of all team members to ensure we remain at the forefront of DS techniques. 

  • Develop an expertise in applying machine learning, NLP, LLM techniques for: automated data extraction from documents, outlier and fraud detection, representation learning, entity resolution, time-series analysis, and network & graph applications. 

  • Experience in using PySpark for large, distributed data transformations and preparation is strongly preferred. 

  • Adopt best practices and quality standards for developing & deploying fit-for-purpose model pipelines, addressing the requirements of the ING model governance. 

  • Be an effective member of a model development & implementation squad, challenge the status quo and build what matters. 

  • Actively learn about our domain, reach out to our stakeholders, and tell captivating stories with our data to create a journey that makes our bank and our society safer. 

  • You are able to pro-actively and constructively find compromises and solutions where conflicts and or the need for tradeoffs arise.

  • 8+ years of experience in data science, with some data engineering and/or other technology related capabilities.  

  • Publications in top-tier Machine Learning conferences or journals is strongly preferred. 

  • Proven experience in managing, mentoring, steering a group of multiple data scientists in a data science project over a longer period of time & have a clear vision on how to do so.  

  • Strong data science background in Computer Science, Statistics, Engineering, Physics or similar technical field (math or engineering)  

  • You are strong in AI, machine learning, and statistics techniques and have affinity to stay up-to-date with latest developments in those areas.  

  • Affinity of working with financial data. 

  • Experience with a corporate environment and/or the financial industry.  

  • Because of the big diversity in the team, you will need strong soft- and communication skills.
