Position Summary:
The Certified Respiratory Practitioner (CRP) provides respiratory care services to residents within a skilled nursing and rehabilitation setting. The CRP is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating all aspects of respiratory therapy care to promote optimal pulmonary function and resident well-being. This role collaborates closely with the interdisciplinary team to ensure high-quality, person-centered respiratory care that aligns with facility standards, physician orders, and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
Resident Care & Clinical Practice
- Perform respiratory therapy assessments, including evaluation of lung sounds, oxygen saturation, respiratory effort, and response to therapy.
- Administer oxygen therapy, aerosolized medications, chest physiotherapy, and other prescribed treatments.
- Set up, operate, and maintain respiratory therapy equipment such as AVAPs, CPAP/BiPAP machines, and oxygen delivery systems.
- Monitor and document resident responses to therapy and make appropriate recommendations for care modifications.
- Participate in care planning and multidisciplinary case reviews to support optimal resident outcomes.
- Provide education to residents, families, and staff regarding respiratory conditions, treatment plans, and equipment use.
Equipment & Safety
- Ensure proper maintenance, cleaning, and calibration of respiratory therapy equipment.
- Maintain accurate records of equipment usage, preventive maintenance, and supply inventory.
- Adhere to infection control, safety, and regulatory standards at all times.
Collaboration & Communication
- Collaborate with physicians, nurses, rehabilitation therapists, and other team members to coordinate comprehensive care.
- Communicate effectively and timely regarding resident condition changes and treatment effectiveness.
- Support staff training and competency development in respiratory therapy techniques, oxygen administration and utilization of requisite equipment (ie. AVAP).
Compliance & Documentation
- Document all assessments, treatments, and outcomes accurately in the medical record per facility policy and state/federal requirements.
- Ensure all therapy practices align with current standards of respiratory care and facility policy.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and audits related to respiratory care services. Comply with all documentation, infection control, and safety standards required by the Ohio Department of Health (ODH), Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), and Ohio Department of Medicaid (ODM).
- Close out the quarter (30 June, 30 Sept, 31 Dec, 31 Mar) and calculate for each resident:
- Days on AVAP during quarter
- Number of AVAP episodes during the quarter
- Resident discharge from AVAP program status (if applicable)
- Prepare the ODM 10228 form using the data collected, fill in required resident lines, totals.
- Review for accuracy and completeness, including matching internal records, cross-check for missing residents, ensure AVAP episodes validated in infection control logs.
- Submit via secure email to nfpolicy@medicaid.ohio.gov by the 25th of the month following quarter end.
- Archive a copy internally (both submitted form + supporting data/logs) in case of ODM audit.
- Monitor Outcomes of all AVAP residnets.
Qualifications:
- Certification: Current Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRP) credential through the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC).
- Licensure: Active and unrestricted state license (as required by state regulations).
- Education: Graduate of an accredited respiratory therapy program.
- Experience:
- Minimum of one (5) year of respiratory therapy experience preferred; prior experience in long-term care, skilled nursing, or post-acute rehabilitation settings highly desirable.
- Skills & Competencies:
- Strong clinical assessment and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities.
- Knowledge of ventilator management and oxygen therapy in subacute or chronic care environments.
- Proficiency in electronic medical records and clinical documentation systems.
