Job Profile Summary
The Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist (COMT) provides advanced clinical support to ophthalmologists through specialized diagnostic testing, surgical assistance, and patient care services. This role requires expert-level proficiency in ophthalmic technology and adherence to standards set by the International Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (IJCAHPO). The COMT also contributes to staff development by training ophthalmic assistants and technicians.
Essential Responsibilities

Assist physicians with patient history and documentation.
Perform basic and advanced ophthalmic tests including tonometry, clinical optics, ocular motility, visual fields, and topical anesthesia administration under direct supervision of a Physician.
Conduct specialized procedures such as photography, pharmacological studies, and contact lens support.
Maintain and sterilize ophthalmic instruments and equipment, including ophthalmic lasers.
Record test results accurately in patient records and electronic medical systems.
Set up and assist with minor and laser surgeries in clinic and hospital settings.
Perform operator-level maintenance on ophthalmic equipment.
Conduct Goldman visual field testing and other advanced diagnostics.
Train Certified Ophthalmic Technicians, Certified Ophthalmic Assistants, and trainees in clinical procedures.
Clean and stock exam rooms, surgical suites, and laser rooms.
May perform microbiology functions including specimen collection, staining, and microscopy as directed.

Education Requirements
High School Diploma or GED required.
Experience Requirements
At least 5 years of experience required including training in all JCAHPO ophthalmic technologist skills.
License/Certification/Registration Requirements
Current Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist (COMT) certification or accredited institutional course equivalency.
Current Basic Life Support issued by the American Heart Association required upon hire.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Advanced knowledge of ophthalmic procedures, diagnostics, and surgical support.
Proficiency in specialized testing including Goldman visual fields, ocular motility, and pharmacologic studies.
Ability to train and mentor ophthalmic staff across certification levels.
Strong attention to detail and documentation accuracy.
Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks under moderate supervision.
Effective communication and teamwork skills in a clinical environment.
