As the multi-specialty group practice for the faculty of the University of Minnesota Medical School, University of Minnesota Physicians has more than 950 physicians and 1,600 health professionals, providing clinical care in over 100 specialty and subspecialty areas. Our mission is three-fold: delivering exceptional patient care, advancing medicine through research, and training the next generation of health professionals.

University of Minnesota Physicians is seeking a Certified Nurse-Midwife to join the University of Minnesota’s Department of Obstetrics and Women's Health-Division of OB/GYN and Midwifery to practice full-scope midwifery in Minneapolis, MN. The CNM will work as a member of the healthcare team in the independent management of maternity and gynecological health care, focusing on pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum, family planning, perimenopause/menopause and preventative care throughout the life time. CNMs practice in accordance with the Standards of the Practice of Nurse-Midwifery, as defined by the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM).

Practice Details:

  • 1.0 FTE position available, joining 11 CNMs.         
  • Diverse patient population, 2 clinic sites.
  • Onsite specialties include: MFM, OB/GYN, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Urogyn, Pharmacy consultation, Breast Health/mammography, and Psychology.
  • The CNMs attend births at the University of Minnesota Medical Center, Birthplace. We offer a variety of support for normal physiologic birth for patients including water birth, EFM telemetry/Monica, nitrous oxide, slings, birth balls, CUB, rebozo and peanut balls. We value, support, and recommend doula involvement.
  • University of Minnesota Medical Center, Birthplace, has a collaborative, supportive and respectful culture with strong midwifery representation and leadership. The hospital leadership supports robust quality improvement initiatives and innovative care model development. 
  • The group prides itself on a stellar collaborative model with the CNM, OB/GYN, and MFM providers.
  • This is an academic practice with commitment to teaching CNM and NP students, medical students, family medicine residents and working with OB residents. We have adjunct faculty appointments with the UMN Medical School.
  • The practice has a close working relationship with the UMN School of Nursing DNP program, affording more opportunities for academic involvement and direct DNP QI project support.
  • We serve all people and strive to provide person-centered, affirming, individualized, equitable, and respectful care.
  • We cultivate relationships with midwives attending birth center and home births, and streamline care when a patient needs to transfer to the hospital, honoring midwifery to midwifery care or support transfer to MD care as needed.

Position Qualifications:

  • A qualified candidate will be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing and formal nurse-midwife training program. The candidate will have a current, or be eligible for, MN RN license and be approved or eligible by the Minnesota Board of Nursing for prescription writing privileges, be certified through American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB) and meet threshold criteria/qualifications for Credentialing and Privileges with UMP/MHFV. Membership and involvement with the MN Affiliate of ACNM and national ACNM is expected.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • DNP or PhD preferred (or in process) OR candidates with an MS degree and plans for doctoral degree. MS degree considered. 3 years of clinical and teaching experience preferred, but new graduates will be considered.
  • Interest or experience working with historically marginalized populations.

The full-time salary range is $133,497 - $160,874 commensurate with practice experience and may also include incentive compensation or additional specialty-specific compensation components. Salary prorated based on FTE.
