Certified CS/SPD Technicians are responsible for cleaning and maintaining surgical tools and hospital equipment. It is your job to make sure that the sterilized tools are then organized into trays containing the instruments required for routine or special surgeries. You are also responsible for checking equipment to make sure it is in good repair and up to date. Your overall goal will be to ensure a sterile environment for patients in care. A caregiver in this position works evenings from 2:30PM – 11:00PM. 

 

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Perform case pull functions. 

  • Demonstrate proper handling of equipment, instrumentation and chemicals while adhering to preventative maintenance schedules and personal protective equipment (PPE) standards during the decontamination process. 

  • Scan, sort and inspect instruments for functionality and cleanliness. 

  • Assemble instruments according to provided lists and wrap and label them following documented procedures. 

  • Ensure proper cleaning, decontamination, assembly and high-level disinfection of reusable instrumentation in accordance with AAMI ST79 standards. 

  • Monitor and control the distribution of supplies and equipment. 

  • Perform record-keeping functions within the electronic tracking system, including processing, sterilization and quality assurance documentation. 

  • Participate in in-service education to stay updated on best practices and industry standards. 

  • Build case carts using electronic preference cards and dispatch them to appropriate locations. 

  • Perform preceptor duties and assist in educating non-certified technicians. 

 

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • High School Diploma or GED 

  • Sterile Processing certification (e.g., CRCST, CSPDT, CFER or CER) 

  • Two - five years of experience in central service/sterile processing areas 

  • Military experience such as Hospital Corpsmen (HM), Machinery Repairman (MR), Aircraft Maintenance Technician (2A3X3), Biomedical Equipment Specialist (68A), Small Arms Repairer (91F) or similar will be considered   

  • Ability to use the computerized instrument tracking system to perform assigned duties, including obtaining instrument count sheets, special handling instructions for instrumentation, documenting sterilization loads and other tasks 

 

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: 

  • Successful completion of a recognized training program with certification in central service/sterile processing 

  • Basic computer skills 

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform duties while standing, sitting, stooping, and reaching for long periods of time; ability to lift up to 25 pounds on a continual basis; ability to push, pull, and navigate carts weighing up to 200 pounds and manual dexterity sufficient to perform the basic functions of the job; exposure to environments of bacterial and viral contamination, and possible exposure to sterilization gases. 

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
