Job Summary

Under close supervision, perform semi-skilled manual work, maintenance and operating duties of a minor or routine nature in connection with power plant operation. Assist in monitoring and inspecting all plant equipment including gas/steam turbines, generators, boilers/heat recovery steam generator (HRSGs), transformers, pumps, condensers, switchyard and related auxiliary equipment. Perform semi-skilled work in the checking, inspecting, repair, maintenance, installation and construction of plant equipment and structures. Perform semi-skilled technical work in conjunction with electrical systems, detection and repair of single loop control systems, electronic devices, communication systems and instruments such as meters, gauges, and regulators. Perform basic technical work in chemical analyses, industrial hygiene and environmental testing and calculations related to the operating efficiency of power plant equipment. Assist others in conducting tests, surveys and layout work. Communicate and coordinate activities affecting safe and efficient operation of plant in an often distracting and multitasking environment. Demonstrate ability to work with others at all levels.

Job Description

CC Plant Tech Assoc. - CC Plant Tech Lead:

What You'll Do:

  • Demonstrate ethical behavior and show strong leadership in safe and healthy work behaviors and environmental stewardship.
  • Adhere to proper operating practices and procedures designed to prevent injury, illness and environmental noncompliance.
  • Observe and comply with governmental and company environmental, safety and health regulations.
  • Demonstrate a strong work ethic, integrity and willingness to work and communicate effectively with all AEP employees and contractors.
  • Assist in performing equipment checks to ensure proper safe and efficient operations of the start-up, operation and shutdown of turbines, generators, condensers, boilers/heat recovery steam generators (HRSGs), boiler feed pumps, exciters, transformers, switchyard and auxiliary equipment.
  • Operate valves, pumps, electrical disconnects, breakers and controls, etc. from remote locations as directed.
  • Report all abnormal plant equipment conditions and alarms to lead coordinator or supervision.
  • Assist in monitoring field controlling, indicating and recording devices, compares results with established standards and makes adjustments as required to operating conditions.
  • Enters and reviews data in the logbook.
  • Assist in maintaining and monitoring basic boiler water chemistry and other plant cycle chemistry by reviewing operational data and collecting and analyzing samples.
  • Assist in maintaining and operating the water treatment plant.
  • Assist in analyzing data such as chemical test results, conductivity, pH, flow and temperature readings, etc. and make appropriate adjustments.
  • Under supervision operate and maintain precision laboratory and field analyzers with QA/QC standards.
  • Gather inventory data on laboratory reagents, chemicals, records information and assist in ordering materials as needed.
  • Unload deliveries of chemicals and gases per site procedures as directed.
  • As directed, assist in monitoring, inspecting, installing, removing, testing, adjusting, calibrating, troubleshooting and repairing electrical, electronic, instrumentation and plant controls systems and components.
  • Assist in conducting simple electrical system interlock and circuit breaker trip checks to determine proper operational performance.
  • Perform simple control system monitoring using a computer interface terminal as directed.
  • Assist in using elementary, schematic, wiring and control diagrams to locate, troubleshoot and repair control systems involving electrical, electronic, mechanical, pneumatic or hydraulic components.
  • Use electrical and instrumentation test equipment to troubleshoot and calibrate plant equipment as directed.
  • Operate hoists, fork-lift truck, small tractors, aerial lifts, scissor lifts, mobile and overhead cranes and automotive equipment and inspect scaffold and rigging after completion of training and in accordance with AEP policies and procedures.
  • Assist in performing basic mechanical maintenance work including, dismantling, rebuilding, adjusting, aligning, packing and cleaning equipment.
  • Operate welding machine and gas torch to cut, heat, braze and make tack and temporary welds, etc. after completion of training and as directed.
  • Assist licensed employees in performing minor maintenance work on HVAC and plumbing systems.
  • Properly use machine shop equipment, power and hand tools.
  • Perform rough carpentry work and limited masonry work.
  • Clean and prepare surfaces for painting, perform painting using brushes or spray equipment.
  • Loads, unloads, moves, opens and handles materials, supplies and equipment.
  • Perform basic predictive and preventive maintenance work by inspecting, monitoring, lubricating, troubleshooting and testing plant equipment to determine conditions such as wear, corrosion and deposits.

  • Must meet the following requirements: Must have a two-year Associate Degree in Electronics, Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, Power Plant Technologies, Industrial Engineering Technology or equivalent experience and/or education.

Work Experience requirement listed below:

  • Must have the ability to work effectively with other employees and contractors and learn to instruct and direct the work of others.
  • Must be able to learn and perform duties in accordance with company rules, safety policies and procedures.

Other Requirements:

  • Must be able to learn OSHA and environmental laws, regulations, guidelines and polices.
  • Must be able to learn all applicable operating and maintenance instructions and procedures.
  • Must be able to learn the tools and equipment and their use as required in the work.
  • Must have demonstrated the ability to physically and mentally perform required work in an often distracting and multitasking plant environment.
  • Must be able to understand the care and attention required for the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of the equipment to which assigned.
  • Must be able to read, interpret and work from prints and specifications.
  • Must possess the appropriate State driver's license.
  • Must be available for overtime and on-call duties as outlined by plant supervision.
  • Must be willing to assist with maintenance and operational activities at other AEP facilities when needed as outlined by plan.
  • Must satisfactorily complete in such time frames as may be established by the Company all required training and job demonstrations and pass an examination as determined by the company to advance to the CC Plant Technician classification in order to remain eligible for continued employment.

  • Possesses the ability to communicate effectively with peers and plant management.

CC Plant Tech:

Work Experience requirement listed below:

  • Must have performed the duties of, & maintained all the qualifications, certifications & licenses of CC Plant Technician Assc, or the equivalent, & must be able to pass an examination and/or demonstration as determined by the company, & in addition: Demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Possess the ability to communicate effectively with peers and plant management.
  • Should have 6 to 12 months of power plant experience in operations, maintenance, electrical, instrumentation and controls in gas turbine/HRSG systems.
  • Must have a basic knowledge of applicable operating and maintenance instructions and procedures.
  • Understand the care and attention required for the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of the equipment to which assigned.
  • Must have a basic knowledge of the principles of operating the plant safely and efficiently during start-up, normal operation and shutdown of boilers / HRSGs, turbines, generators, condensers, boiler feed pumps, exciters, transformers, etc. and their auxiliaries and accessories.
  • Must have the skills and knowledge of plant operations outside of the control room.
  • Must have basic knowledge and skills needed to analyze, interpret, calibrate and adjust plant instruments and controls, and be capable of detecting and making repairs to simple control systems and understand protective systems.
  • Must have basic knowledge of chemical tests, procedures, reagents, etc. to perform chemical analysis, industrial hygiene evaluations and environmental sampling.
