About the Role
Permanent part time Senior Allied Health role working within a multidisciplinary team providing clinical assessment, treatment and support to clients who are experiencing significant mental health difficulties and their families.

You will deliver clinical and therapeutic interventions within a recovery-focused Strengths Model of Practice across Crisis Assessment and Treatment Team (CATT), Psychiatric Triage, Emergency Department Mental Health (EDMH) and MHaP (PACER) functions.

  • Provide comprehensive face to face and telephone assessments including mental state assessment, risk assessment and plan appropriate crisis interventions in the least restrictive environment to ensure that people in an acute phase of a mental illness receive high quality treatment
  • Use your understanding and working knowledge of the Mental Health Act 2014  and other relevant legislation to ensure least restrictive practice is the standard approach and consumers rights are protected
  • Demonstrate highly developed interpersonal and communication skills, including sound oral and writing skills
  • Provide leadership and direction in the development of behaviour that enhances communication, interaction and delivery of acute response services in keeping with the mission and strategic goals of the service
  • Actively participate in the development and supervision of junior staff and students. 

Classifications for this position will range from:

  • OT/SW Grade 3 YB24 - YB27 or YC46 - YC49 ($101,597 - $116,074 per annum pro rata)
  • Psychologist Grade 3 PL1 – PL4 ($108,279 - $123,905 per annum pro rata)
  • RPN Grade 4 NP75 - NP77 ($112,465 - $121,113 per annum pro rata)



Your Contribution

  • Certificate, Diploma or Degree (minimum) in Nursing which meets the registration requirements of the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency, Division 1 or 3. Master’s Degree or Doctorate in Clinical Psychology recognized by the Australian Psychological Society and registered as a Psychologist with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.
  • Bachelor of Social Work (B.SW). Eligible for membership of the Australian Association of Social Work and registered as a Social Worker with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.
  • Bachelor of Occupational Therapy.  Eligible for membership of Australian Association of Occupational Therapy and registered as an Occupational Therapist with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.
  • Registration with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency
  • A current Victorian driver’s license.
  • A valid Nationally Coordinated Criminal history check, or willing to obtain

The Community Acute Response Team (CART) of SVMH comprises Psychiatric Triage, Crisis Assessment and Treatment Team (CATT), Emergency Department Mental Health (EDMH), Mental Health and Police (PACER), Extended Triage and HOPE (Suicide Prevention) programs.

LOCAL WORK ENVIRONMENT

St. Vincent’s Mental Health (SVMH) includes an adult area mental health service for the inner city areas of Yarra and Boroondara.  The adult mental health service components are: The Footbridge Community Care Unit (CCU), the 44 bed Acute Inpatient Service (AIS) located on the St. Vincent’s Hospital site, the North Fitzroy PARC and two community mental health services (CMHS) at Hawthorn and East Melbourne (Clarendon CMHS). Community mental health services comprise the Triage and Crisis assessment and Treatment (CAT) Service and the Primary Intervention Care Team (PICT) includes Extended Triage and HOPE (Suicide Prevention),   Continuing Care (CCT), Mobile Support and Treatment (MST) and Homeless Outreach (CHOPS) services.  A Consultation & Liaison Service is provided to the health service. NEXUS Dual Diagnosis Service and the Body Image and Eating Disorders Assessment and Treatment Service (BETRS) are regional services. Statewide services are the Victorian Dual Disability Service and the Victorian Transcultural Mental Health. The Acute Inpatient Service includes 5 beds designated as the Koori State-wide Inpatient Service and linked to the Victorian Aboriginal Health Service.

All St Vincent’s Mental Health clinical staff are expected to be familiar, and practice in a manner consistent with the National Practice Standards for the Mental Health Workforce.

POSITION PURPOSE

Under the guidance of the Manager, CATS and the Clinical Director, CATS and in conjunction with team members, provide a high standard of clinical assessment, treatment and support to clients who are experiencing significant mental health difficulties and their families. The multidisciplinary team provides a range of clinical and therapeutic interventions using the recovery-focused Strengths Model of Recovery-Orientated Practice.  Duties could be performed across all parts of the Acute Response Service (ARS) which includes the Crisis, Triage, EDMH and MHaP (PACER) Teams.

The CATS clinician will contribute to the overall strength of the service by bringing discipline specific knowledge and skills and taking responsibility for representing these within clinical meetings. 

The CATS clinician will actively contribute to the development and maintenance of sustainable working partnerships with internal and external service providers.

This position works a seven day rotating roster and participates in Triage night duty.

POSITION DUTIES

  • Provide comprehensive face to face and telephone assessments including mental state assessment, risk assessment and plan appropriate crisis interventions in the least restrictive environment to ensure that people in an acute phase of a mental illness receive high quality treatment
  • Triaging/screening referrals and determine eligibility for adult mental health program service, including prioritising responses
  • Conduct complex assessments in the community whilst being partnered with a police officer as part of MHaP (PACER) response initiative
  • Ensuring the provision of ongoing expert advice, education and liaison to the Police, General Practitioners, staff within the Emergency Department, other agencies and service providers in relation to mental illness, self-harming behaviours, suicide intervention, drug and alcohol abuse related to mental illness and other complex care situations
  • Provide knowledge and skills based on professional background as part of a multidisciplinary team and consult with other staff on specialist matters.
  • Develop knowledge of local resources and services to make appropriate referrals, provide advocacy and initiate service development that will proactively enhance consumer access to community services
  • Clinical support and/or consultation to consumers of the service and to other clinicians within the service
  • Promote strong interagency relationships and ensure timely and accurate information sharing between services with shared consumers
  • Provide leadership and direction in the development of behaviour that enhances communication, interaction and achievement of the ARS service in keeping with the mission and strategic goals of the service
  • Use your understanding and working knowledge of the Mental Health Act 2014  and other relevant legislation to ensure least restrictive practice is the standard approach and consumers rights are protected
  • Demonstrate highly developed interpersonal and communication skills, including sound oral and writing skills
  • Show capacity to work independently in the community and as a member of a multidisciplinary team
  • Participate in the review and development of policies and procedures, manage portfolio responsibilities, participate in serviced wide committees and service delivery improvement initiatives
  • Facilitate professional and personal development by networking with other professional/community groups
  • Contribute towards identifying, defining, delivering and prioritising education/development of the service
  • Have a clear awareness of the National Access Emergency Targets (NEAT) and how these are to be operationalised within ED’s
  • Sharing information openly with consumers
  • Actively challenging stigmatising attitudes, discrimination and social exclusion.
  • Actively participate in the development and supervision of junior staff and students. 

SELECTION CRITERIA

ESSENTIAL REGISTRATION, LICENSE OR QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Certificate, Diploma or Degree (minimum) in Nursing which meets the registration requirements of the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency, Division 1 or 3. 
  • Master’s Degree or Doctorate in Clinical Psychology recognized by the Australian Psychological Society and registered as a Psychologist with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.
  • Bachelor of Social Work (B.SW). Eligible for membership of the Australian Association of Social Work and registered as a Social Worker with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.
  • Bachelor of Occupational Therapy.  Eligible for membership of Australian Association of Occupational Therapy and registered as an Occupational Therapist with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.
  • Registration with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency

OTHER ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • The successful applicant must have a minimum of 5 years post qualification clinical experience within Mental Health Services.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team and to contribute to a positive tam environment
  • Extensive experience in conducting comprehensive assessments including mental state assessment, risk assessment and  proven ability in planning appropriate interventions and crisis intervention techniques
  • Knowledge and ability to provide Psychiatric Triage services.
  • A comprehensive understanding and working knowledge of the Mental Health Act 2014 and other relevant legislation.
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both written and verbal) and proven ability to liaise, negotiate and communicate with staff, community agencies and the wider service system
  • Awareness of the National Access Emergency Targets (NEAT) and the requirements of these
  • Awareness of the Recovery Framework and its impact on the Triage Service

OTHER NON ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS/INFORMATION

  • Post-graduate qualifications in mental health or progress toward such qualifications are desirable.
  • Drug and Alcohol knowledge and or experience.
  • The position will work a rotating roster across seven days including night duty
