Our Merchandise team works with supplier partners and store teams on category ranging, buying, pricing and promotions so we can get the right products on the right shelves at the right time for our customers. 

Te Tūranga – About the role 

We’re looking for a Category Manager – Butchery Small Goods to help shape and deliver the Coop’s customerdriven meat offer across our retail banners. 

This is a handson, fastpaced commercial role, working within a motivated Butchery category team. You’ll use customer insights and category management principles to drive growth, strong value perception, and great execution instore – while balancing pricing, promotions, innovation and supplier relationships. 

You’ll work closely with the Business Manager – Butchery, store teams, suppliers and internal partners, contributing to strategic initiatives that support our members and ultimately our customers. 

Key responsibilities include: 

  • Driving the Butchery Small Goods category plan, aligned to shopper insights and Coop strategy 

  • Implementing competitive pricing and promotion strategies that balance margin and customer value 

  • Planning and executing category promotions in collaboration with marketing and suppliers 

  • Building strong partnerships with local and national small goods suppliers 

  • Driving innovation while maintaining high standards of quality, food safety and ethical sourcing 

  • Reviewing range performance and space optimisation 

  • Partnering with store teams to support execution, 

  • Championing sustainable sourcing, packaging and waste reduction initiatives

You’re commercially curious, customerfocused and comfortable operating at pace. You enjoy managing complexity, building relationships, and turning insight into action. 

You’re known as someone who gets things done, balances multiple priorities, and works confidently with suppliers and store teams to deliver outcomes. 

Ideally, you’ll bring: 

  • Category management or commercial experience in FMCG, grocery retail and/or meat 

  • Strong commercial and analytical capability, particularly across pricing and promotions 

  • Proven supplier negotiation and relationshipbuilding experience 

  • A customerled mindset with an understanding of retail trends 

  • Great planning, communication and stakeholder management skills 

  • A proactive, solutionsfocused and adaptable working style 

  • The ability to manage early starts, aligned to the rhythm of the meat category
