About the School of the Environment

Established in 2023, UQ’s School of the Environment brings together multidisciplinary researchers across the physical, biological and social sciences to address the UN Sustainable Development Goals—particularly climate action, life on land, and life below water—through globally relevant research, training and impact. The School makes a major contribution to UQ’s standing, ranking 1st in Australia and 7th globally for Environment/Ecology, and 1st in Australia and 13th worldwide for Environmental Science & Engineering (2025 NTU Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers for World Universities). These strengths support a research culture that connects worldclass capability with realworld impact.

The School’s research spans environmental management; geography and geospatial science; earth and ocean science; biodiversity and conservation science, ecology, genetics and evolution; zoology; and marine biology. With more than 100 academic group leaders, over 100 postdoctoral fellows, UQ’s largest graduate student cohort, and more than $26M in external research funding annually, the School offers a highly collaborative environment for ambitious research and education.

Research within the School integrates fundamental and applied approaches to advance environmental knowledge and deliver practical solutions. This work is supported by specialist analytical and field capabilities in biomonitoring and environmental diagnostics, spatial and statistical analysis, sustainability assessment, and geoanalytical and chemical methods. Strong partnerships with industry, government and community organisations further enhance research translation and impact. Researchers and students also benefit from three fieldbased stations at Heron Island, Moreton Bay and Hidden Vale.

The School delivers a comprehensive and interdisciplinary curriculum, emphasising theory, practice and professionalism, and serving more than 1,600 coursework students across undergraduate and postgraduate programs. Learning is enriched through contemporary digital platforms, highquality workshops and practical activities, and exceptional field experiences in Australia and overseas.
