OCONUS-Antarctica-McMurdo Station Full time

Summary:  

Assist with the packaging, marking, labeling, documenting, and moving all USAP material from McMurdo Station to outlying field locations, the United States, and other international destinations. 

 

Position Responsibilities: 

  • Is responsible for ensuring that safety is the highest priority in the workplace 

  • Safely operates material handling equipment (pallet jacks, forklifts 4,000-15000 lbs. capacities), passenger vans, and pick-up trucks 

  • Receives and delivers science and technical event cargo 

  • Responsible for accurately processing outgoing shipments, ensuring all participants meet packaging, marking, labeling, and documentation requirements 

  • Responsible for identifying and safely handling dangerous goods  

  • Tracks intracontinental using a scanner linked to Maximo 

  • Coordinates with Grantees, ASC Workcenters, other USAP Agencies, and the U.S. Military to move mission-critical material on time 

  • Assist in packing temperature-sensitive samples for transport to the United States and international institutions 

  • Attends daily and weekly safety meetings and occasionally presents weekly safety lectures 

  • Will frequently perform strenuous physical work 

  • Works weekends and extra hours as required   

  • Performs other duties as required 

 

Required Education, Experience, Certificates and Licenses: 

  • High School diploma or GED 

  • A minimum of 2 years of diversified experience in the cargo shipping industry, warehouse operations, heavy equipment, or equivalent experience is required. 

Expected Skills and Competencies: 

  • Good customer service and customer resolution skills are required.   

  • Good organizational and verbal/written communication skills are required 

  • Must be familiar with Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook. 

 

Preferred: 

  • An understanding of remote site and/or polar logistics. 

  • A minimum of 2 years cargo or supply previous experience with the USAP. 

  • Previous experience in shipping temperature controlled cargo. 

 

Physical and/or Other Requirements: 

  • Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods  

  • Successful completion of Medical and Dental examinations required by the NSF for deployment to Antarctica 

  • Successful completion of drug screening and background check required by employer 

  • Successful completion of Federal Background Check required by the NSF 

  • Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum as required by the position.  

  • Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors in extreme cold as required by the position.  

  • Must participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts & safety objectives 

  • Valid Driver’s License issued in the United States 

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization. Note: US Citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location.
