Career Resource Assistant - Federal Work Study (Student Wage)

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW 

The University of Virginia Career Center prepares students to make informed decisions as they explore the constantly evolving world of careers. Through a mix of personalized advising, employer connections, programming, and experiential learning, the Career Center supports undergraduate and graduate students across academic disciplines. Staff work closely with faculty, employers, and alumni to ensure students are equipped for career development and post-graduation success. 

POSITION OVERVIEW 

The Career Resource Assistant (CRA) serves as a key front-line representative of the UVA Career Center. This role focuses on providing exceptional customer service to students, visitors, and guests within Bryant Hall and occasionally supporting events and meetings held elsewhere on Grounds. CRAs facilitate daily operations, ensure a welcoming environment, and help connect students to Career Center services, staff, and resources. 

This position is ideal for students interested in developing strong communication skills, customer service experience, and insights into career development services. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES 

Customer Service & Front Desk Support 

  • Greet students and visitors warmly as they arrive at the Career Center. 

  • Manage the check-in process, including obtaining computing IDs for all visitors attending appointments. 

  • Answer general questions about Career Center services, office hours, and scheduling procedures. 

  • Provide assistance with in-person appointment scheduling and navigation of office resources. 

Operational Support 

  • Maintain a welcoming, orderly, and professional front-desk environment. 

  • Support the flow of appointments and office operations throughout the day. 

Event & Meeting Support 

  • Twice monthly, assist with logistics of Career Center meetings or events that may occur at UVA locations outside Bryant Hall. 

  • Support staff with occasional event-related tasks as needed. 

  • While work primarily occurs in Bryant Hall, CRAs may be asked to assist with events or meetings elsewhere on Grounds. 

Administrative Support 

  • Assist full-time staff with basic administrative tasks related to customer service, operations, and office communications.

JOB REQUIREMENTS 

Qualifications: 

  • Current undergraduate UVA student. 

  • Federal Work Study eligibility is required

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills. 

  • Demonstrated dependability, professionalism, and willingness to learn. 

  • No prior experience required.

Additional Requirements: 

  • Must be available to work weekday shifts between 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM. 

  • Work hours, around 10 hours/week per CRA, are shared across multiple CRAs to cover operations.

Student employees are subject to semester and/or academic-year evaluations by their supervisor(s). 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION 

This position provides experience with career center operations, customer service, and problem-solving. 

Compensation: $16.75 per hour 

Work Location: Bryant Hall (with occasional assignments elsewhere on Grounds)

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
