Job Description

Nevada State University invites applications for the position of Career Advisor.

Reporting to the Director of Career Services, the Career Advisor’s main purpose is to help prepare and support students and alumni in achieving their educational, professional and career goals. This includes providing career advising and education on topics such as, but not limited to, career exploration and/or major exploration, career planning, job and internship search, application material review (resumes, cover letters, personal statements), graduate school search and planning, and interview skills. In addition to providing 1:1 advising, the position will also oversee the facilitation of 4-5 career events each semester as well as presentations and workshops for individual classrooms and programs.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide holistic 1:1 career counseling and advising to students and alumni on career and major exploration, job/internship search processes and strategies, interview skills and techniques, resume/CV development, cover letter development, opportunities for skill building and involvement (e.g. student clubs, volunteering, etc.), effective networking, job negotiation strategies, graduate/professional school exploration and preparation, and more.
  • Creating and presenting informational and hands-on workshops to student groups and classes on career-related topics.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Director of Employer Relations to stay up to date on workforce trends and upcoming opportunities for students/alumni to connect with employer partners.
  • Implement data collection strategies to assess impact of services, events and programs.
  • Plan and execute 4-5 career development programs each semester.
  • Create and disseminate marketing materials for assigned workshops/programs.
  • Represent the Career Services Center at admission/recruiting events, new student orientation programs, and community networking events. Occasional evening and weekend hours required.
  • Support the training and supervision of student workers.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development to remain informed about current trends, policies, and best practices in career advising.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution.
  • At least two (2) years of experience working in higher education, career/workforce development, training and development, human resources, job placement services, or a related field.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Exceptional customer service skills and professionalism.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Experience working with diverse populations.
  • Ability to complete multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to effectively communicate and engage individuals through 1:1 advising, classroom presentations and workshops.
  • Eligibility to work in the United States without sponsorship (Nevada State does not sponsor employment-related visas).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in student affairs, higher education, counseling, sociology, social work, human resources or a related field.
  • Knowledge of career development and student development theories and applications.
  • Experience with event planning and management.
  • Experience with Handshake CSM.
  • Knowledge of career readiness competencies (NACE; National Association of Colleges & Employers).
  • Knowledge or experience with Life Design principles/frameworks .

Salary & Benefits

Budgeted salary for this position is $54,285. Nevada State University offers excellent benefits, including 19.25% retirement match, 24 annual leave days, beginning balance of 30 sick leave days, 12 paid holidays, educational benefits, and three health insurance plans that can be supplemented with flexible spending accounts or health savings accounts.
