Position Summary

The Canvassing Account Manager for South Jersey Gas is responsible for growing residential customer conversions through proactive sales outreach, contractor engagement, and community involvement. This field-based role focuses on converting businesses to natural gas and supporting customers through the conversion journey.

Essential Functions:

  • Deliver on assigned sales targets through proactive canvassing efforts, maintaining strong targeting activities, and achieving high appointment-setting and close rates in designated off-Main territories. 
  • Generate and follow up on leads by developing effective relationships with prospective customers through leadgenerating activities including cold calling, door-to-door canvassing, neighborhood/group presentations, and participation in community events. 
  • Educate prospective customers on the natural gas conversion process, providing clear, accurate, and honest expectations regarding timelines, requirements, and activities. 
  • Build and maintain a strong pipeline of opportunities in off-Main areas by identifying and cultivating referral partnerships with HVAC contractors, real estate professionals, builders, and other trade organizations. 
  • Capture and maintain all sales activities, leads, appointments, and customer interactions in Salesforce. 
  • Onboard new residential customers and recommend energy improvement measures aligned with available Energy Efficiency Programs. 
  • Maintain accurate and timely records including sales call reports, canvassing activity tracking, expense reimbursement documentation, and other required reporting. 
  • Attend regular sales meetings, canvassing strategy sessions, and ongoing training and development programs. 
  • Perform other related duties as assigned. 

Qualifications

Required Background:

  • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience
  • Minimum of one (1) year of sales experience, with successful direct, commissioned sales experience, or equivalent relevant experience 
  • Equivalent work experience may be considered in lieu of degree

Required Skills:

  • Demonstrated experience with cold calling and door-to-door canvassing 
  • Proven track record of meeting or exceeding sales and activity goals 
  • Valid driver’s license with ability to travel extensively 
  • Proficiency working within a CRM platform
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite 
  • Strong interpersonal and canvassing communication skills with the ability to engage customers in off-Main and residential settings 
  • Excellent time management, territory planning, prospecting, and presentation skills 
  • High level of motivation, initiative, and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision 
  • Commitment to delivering positive and professional customer experiences 
  • Strong organizational, verbal, and written communication skills 
  • Ability to build trust and long-term relationships in competitive, face-to-face sales environments 
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with internal partners including Sales, Marketing, Design, and Engineering teams 

Preferred Skills:

  • Salesforce Lightning experience
  • Project management or territory management experience 
  • Ability to understand, explain, and present energy cost comparisons and usage savings 

Environmental Working conditions and expectations:

  • Perform extensive field-based canvassing and community outreach activities year-round 
  • Safety-sensitive position 
  • Frequent travel and driving to canvassing territories, customer homes, and community locations 
  • Regular interaction with contractors at construction and conversion sites, with exposure to varying and sometimes extreme weather conditions, noise, dust, dampness, and humidity
