Job Description Summary:
Camp and Program Staff I and II
Under direct supervision, this position supports Boulder Parks & Recreation’s Community Programs Team in delivering recreation and leisure programming for Boulder’s youth through camps, people with disabilities through EXPAND, and underrepresented communities through the Youth Services Initiative (YSI). Passionate, dedicated, and creative staff will work directly with individuals by supervising and supporting them in activities while making a meaningful difference in their lives. If you are looking to build leadership skills while having fun, then this is the position for you!
This job is part-time with varying hours each season based on the programs offered. Roles include being a camp counselor at summer or school day off camps and being a program staff at weekly activities and special events with people with disabilities and/or people living in low-income housing sites.
The hiring range for these positions is commensurate with experience:
Camp and Program Staff I - $16.82 - $20.69
Camp and Program Staff II - $17.55 - $23.17
Job Description:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Camp and Program Staff I and II
- Supervises and interacts with participants of recreation and leisure programs with a variety of different needs and abilities.
- Provides one on one support to youth, teens and adults with disabilities as needed.
- Supervises the proper use of equipment by youth, teens and adults.
- Ensures safe environment for participants.
- Follows general safety recommendations and regulations for Community Programs Team.
- Enforces safety procedures and program rules.
- Assesses emergencies and provides first aid when necessary.
- Utilizes behavior management/ support techniques to adequately ensure participants’ safety.
- Utilizes group management skills to keep participants safe and engaged.
Camp and Program Staff I
- Assists with Recreation and Leisure Activities for youth and teens.
- Sets up and takes down of activities.
- Explains the rules of a game or activity to groups of 5-15 youth/teens/adults.
- Promotes participation and encourages teamwork.
- Completes tasks when asked/directed by leaders, director and coordinators.
- Leads parts of activities (i.e. lead a drill at basketball).
- Engages actively with participants in activities.
Camp and Program Staff II
- Implements recreation and leisure programming for specified populations.
- Organizes and leads group activities for 5-15 individuals.
- Creates groups, sets up activities, gives instructions, actively supervises participants throughout activities.
- Provides adjustments to general program plans so they are successful for specified populations such as providing accommodations and rule modification as needed.
- Assists the supervisor in supporting Camp & Program Staff.
- Creates a fun and engaging environment for participants.
- Provides guidance and instruction to other staff ensuring they understand their role in activities and are actively participating.
- Communicates with Camp Director and Program Staff Lead about questions or concerns with campers or staff.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Camp and Program Staff I
- Ability to communicate effectively when enforcing policies, rules and regulations.
- Ability to create a fun and engaging environment for participants.
- Ability to evaluate conditions in assigned area and make decisions related to safety.
- Ability to provide excellent customer service to participants and parents/guardians.
- Ability to work as part of a team.
- Ability and willingness to provide support to people with disabilities.
- Ability to demonstrate experience and/or interest in working with youth.
- Knowledge of sports, games and leisure activities.
- Minimum of 16 years of age.
Camp and Program Staff II
- Ability and willingness to attend and complete trainings as required, including State of Colorado Child Care requirements.
- Ability to confidently provide excellent customer service to participants and guardians in programs.
- Ability to demonstrate strong communication, interpersonal and leadership skills, including conflict resolution.
- Ability to evaluate conditions in assigned area and make decisions related to safety in high pressure situations.
- Minimum 18 years of age.
Camp and Program Staff I and II
- Have and maintain acceptable background information, including criminal conviction history.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Camp and Program Staff I
- Ability to show interest and be excited about working with youth, teens, people with disabilities and under-represented youth.
- Ability to communicate with parents/guardians on campers’ progress and express concerns when needed.
- Experience leading recreation or leisure programming with youth, teens and/or adults.
- Experience supervising groups of youth, teens and/or adults.
- Experience working with youth, teens, people with disabilities and/or underrepresented communities in group or one on one settings.
Camp and Program Staff II
- Ability and willingness to drive participants and staff in vehicles provided by Boulder Parks and Recreation.
- Knowledge of principles and experience or certification in instructing sport, recreation or leisure activities.
- Experience supervising/leading staff and/or volunteers.
- One thousand (1000) hours of verifiable experience directly supervising school age children in a group setting.
- Valid Driver’s License and ability to maintain an acceptable motor vehicle record.
Camp and Program Staff I and II
- Ability to communicate bilingually in English and Spanish.
- Knowledge of injury prevention and treatment
- Knowledge of principles and experience instructing sport, recreation, or leisure activities.
- Experience working with and/or supporting people with disabilities.
- First Aid, CPR and AED Certified.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Camp and Program Staff I
- No education or previous experience is necessary for this role.
Camp and Program Staff II
Must meet State of Colorado School-Age Licensing Qualifications:
- Minimum of 455 hours of verifiable experience directly supervising school age children in a group setting OR a bachelor’s degree or higher in any field of study.
- Experience working with youth, teens, people with disabilities and/or underrepresented communities in group or 1:1 settings.
- Experience leading recreation or leisure programming with youth, teens and/or adults.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
- Physical and Mental Effort: Physical ability to participate in activities, run, climb, swim, lift or support the weight of children. Must have sufficient strength, agility, stamina, and flexibility to lift, carry or move a variety of objects up to 20 lbs. Must be able to work while crouching, kneeling, bending, stooping, or assisting children for long periods of time. Must have sufficient hearing to be able to hear and discriminate differing sounds in a variety of situations. Sufficient vision to be able to discriminate between colors, size, and type of objects and people, both close and distant.
- Work Environment: The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high. Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments.
- Machines and Equipment Used: Non-motorized watercraft including kayaks and paddleboards, general recreational equipment
