The cable plant and service desk technician perform duties under the general supervision of the Executive Vice President of Information Services and Director of Infrastructure but works with the Network Director to provide a variety of functions for the Information Services office.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
1. Be able to pull, terminate, test, and repair twisted-pair, coax, and fiber optic cabling.
2. Communicate with management and team members to provide updates on key issues.
3. Help with hardware and software issues as needed.
4. Be able to debug common network issues.
5. Be able to train and supervise student workers.
6. Be able to install wall-mounted televisions, ceiling-mounted projectors, and various audio/video components.
General Guidelines
1. Has a complete knowledge of the University’s cable plant.
2. Maintains the diagrams of the University’s cable plant.
3. Can support hardware and software used by the University.
4. Has good customer relations skills.
5. Has good communications skills.
Qualifications
To perform this FLSA non-exempt position successfully, an individual must have the skills to execute each of the tasks listed in the Essential Duties and Responsibilities section of this document. In general, a broad-based knowledge of copper cable, fiber optic cable, software, hardware repair, and customer service are required. Additionally, the interest and ability to evaluate emerging technologies is necessary to provide timely, accurate information to administration. The requirements listed below are representative of education and/or experience required. Demonstrated Education or Experience
A combination of education and experience equivalent to:
1. Two years of college education.
2. Experience pulling and terminating cable
3. Two years of support experience
4. Two years of experience in hardware repair
