Responsible for optimising the operation of logistics management functions for goods and services typically at a site/country level. Responsibilities likely to be focused on warehousing, transportation and distribution; in small sites it could include wider activities. Logistics and supply chain professionals who work across different supply chain areas (at least 2). The complexity of the role may stem from managing multiple supply chain disciplines or a narrower supply chain focus but with significant accountability.

JOB PURPOSE

The Logistics Manager is accountable for driving operational excellence across all logistics functions at the India level. This role is responsible for planning, coordinating, and optimizing inbound and outbound shipments, including customer dispatches and factory logistics movements. The incumbent will oversee the complete import–export cycle, customs clearance activities, and the management of logistics service providers (freight forwarders, transporters, and customs agents). A key focus of the role is to ensure full compliance with international trade regulations, import/export control requirements, and applicable licenses and statutory obligations, while delivering cost efficiency, service reliability, and continuous process improvement across the logistics network.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

Governance, Compliance & Safety

  • Implement corrective actions and initiate nonconformance procedures in case of defective products or process deviations.
  • Adhere to all applicable Johnson Matthey Management System requirements, standard operating procedures, and statutory regulations.
  • Promote safe work practices, maintain workplace hygiene, and ensure adherence to waste management and chemical spill response protocols.
  • Actively participate in mandatory training and continuous improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing technical and behavioural competencies.

Logistics Operations

  • Lead and optimize all transportation, distribution, and logistics operations at the site and country level to ensure seamless material flow, on-time dispatches, and cost-effective vehicle utilization.
  • Oversee inbound and outbound logistics, including factory dispatches, customer deliveries, and interplant movements.
  • Proactively resolve logistics bottlenecks and operational issues to maintain business continuity.
  • Partner with Global and Regional SCM teams for alignment with group logistics strategies, sustainability initiatives, and continuous improvement programs.
  • Oversee 3PL operations, including daily dispatch execution, documentation, MIS reporting, and performance reviews aligned with contractual SLAs.

Import/Export & Customs Compliance

  • Oversee end-to-end import and export operations, including coordination with freight forwarders, CHAs, and customs officials for timely clearance.
  • Ensure compliance with Customs Act, Import/Export Control, and related trade regulations.
  • Manage and monitor HS classification, valuation, licensing requirements, ADC NOCs, and bonded warehouse documentation.
  • Maintain updated records for audit and ensure zero non-compliance with respect to DGFT, MOEF, and other statutory bodies.

DGFT, EPCG & Advance Authorization Management

  • Independently handle all DGFT-related activities, including Advance Authorization, EPCG, and DFIA schemes for duty benefits and license management.
  • Ensure accurate tracking, utilization, and timely closure of licenses within prescribed validity periods.
  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders (finance, procurement, and global trade teams) and external consultants for redemption, closure, and submission of utilization details.
  • Prepare and submit applications, duty statements, and periodic returns as per DGFT and customs requirements.
  • Maintain meticulous documentation for audits and regulatory inspections to ensure seamless compliance.

Warehouse & Inventory Operations

  • Oversee warehouse operations including inbound receipt, storage, material handling, and dispatch activities across plant and 3PL facilities.
  • Collaborate with production and planning teams to align inventory with production schedules and customer demand.
  • Conduct regular stock audits and ensure proper documentation for physical and system inventory alignment

Performance Management

  • Monitor and analyze logistics KPIs (cost, OTIF, transit time, freight spend, warehouse utilization, etc.) to evaluate performance and identify improvement opportunities.
  • Prepare and present periodic management reports highlighting logistics performance, deviations, and corrective actions.
  • Ensure strict adherence to Service Level Agreements (SLAs) with third-party logistics partners and initiate corrective measures when performance standards are not met.
  • Identify and implement process improvements in logistics, customs compliance, and warehouse operations.
  • Leverage digital tools and analytics for better visibility, cost optimization, and risk control.
  • Drive initiatives supporting sustainability, working capital reduction, and supply chain resilience.
  • Manage the working time, leave planning, overtime, and task allocation for the logistics team.
  • Build and develop team capability through structured performance reviews, coaching, and training programs.

SCOPE

  • The role serves as the central contact for all transportation, shipping, and customs clearance activities across India operations. It includes managing import/export documentation, regulatory compliance, and customs compliance audits, along with supplier performance management for freight forwarders, transporters, and customs agents to ensure timely deliveries, cost efficiency, and customer satisfaction.

SPECIAL FACTORS

  • Strong communication and coordination skills in English.
  • In-depth understanding of customs regulations, import/export procedures, and hands-on experience working with transporters, freight forwarders, and customs agencies.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

QUALIFICATIONS/ KNOWLEDGE/ EXPERIENCE

(TECHNICAL/ PROFESSIONAL KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS COMPETENCY)

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in any discipline with a master’s in business administration (Operations / Supply Chain / International Business) – Essential
  • Experience: Minimum 12 years of progressive experience in Logistics and Supply Chain Management within Automotive, Manufacturing, or EOU environments, with proven exposure to domestic and international logistics – Essential
  • Core Expertise: Strong knowledge of transportation, warehousing, import/export operations, customs compliance, DGFT (AA, EPCG), and 3PL management – Essential
  • System Knowledge: Proficient in SAP (MM / SD modules) and logistics digital tools such as TMS/WMS; ability to analyze data and generate MIS reports – Essential
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Working knowledge of Customs Act, Foreign Trade Policy, FEMA, and documentation for audits, licenses, and statutory compliance – Essential
  • Technical Proficiency: Skilled in MS Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word) Power BI; knowledge of Lean / Six Sigma / Continuous Improvement practices – Desired
