Buyer - Business Support Services

Carnegie Mellon University’s Department of Business Support Services is searching for a Buyer to join the team. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who thrives in an exciting and challenging work environment. In this role, you will primarily be responsible for purchasing products and services while negotiating with vendors to determine pricing and deliverables The buyer is responsible for the entire order process from initiating the purchase order to processing the invoice.

Core responsibilities include:

  • Determines product need and quantity based on sales history.

  • Assists with purchasing, financial, inventory and audit reviews.

  • Initiates purchase orders for ordering computers, software, peripherals, and supplies.

  • Resolves issues/answers questions about departmental and individual orders, purchases, payments, inventory, and invoicing.

  • Recommends and researches alternate/new product selection.

  • Evaluate vendor quotes and product lines to determine if they meet business needs.

  • Advises departments on purchases and related policies and procedures.

  • Ensures university contract requirements are in place for all purchases.

  • Processes payments in collaboration with AP. Reconciles orders, credits, and commissions.

  • Assists with physical inventory evaluation.

  • Year-end financial preparation.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree Required

  • 1-3 years of experience in purchasing, procurement, vendor management, or accounting.

Requirements:

  • Successful completion of a pre-employment background check

  • Sponsorship: Applicants for this position must be currently legally authorized to work for CMU in the United States. CMU will not sponsor or take over the sponsorship of an employment visa for this opportunity.  Carnegie Mellon is not a qualifying employer for the STEM OPT benefit: only the 12-month OPT may be used to work at Carnegie Mellon.
