Job Overview:
As a Manager BI BA, you will translate business needs into clear, testable BI requirements and deliver high-quality prototypes and dashboards. You will execute hands-on data analysis and profiling, contribute to dimensional data model designs based on Kimball principles, develop source-to-target mappings, and build Power BI reports with a focus on usability, accuracy, and performance. You will collaborate closely with stakeholders, BI developers, and data engineers, support Agile delivery, and contribute to data governance artifacts.
Key Responsibilities:
Requirements and analysis
Elicit and document business requirements via workshops/interviews; capture user stories and acceptance criteria.
Define and validate KPIs/metrics and business rules; maintain traceability from requirements to delivered artifacts.
Perform data profiling and quality assessment; document data issues and propose remediation.
Modeling and integration
Contribute to conceptual and logical data model designs (Kimball/star schemas for self-service).
Produce and maintain source-to-target mappings and functional specifications for transformations.
Validate transformation logic against business rules in partnership with data engineers.
Prototyping and dashboard delivery
Build and iterate data prototypes to test concepts and obtain stakeholder feedback.
Develop and optimize Power BI datasets and reports (DAX, Power Query/M, relationships, aggregations).
Apply best practices for usability, storytelling, and accessibility; choose appropriate connectivity modes (Import/DirectQuery/Composite) and configure incremental refresh where applicable.
Quality, governance, and security
Execute test plans (data reconciliation, regression, UAT support); log and track defects to closure.
Implement Row-Level Security (RLS) and manage report-level permissions in coordination with platform teams.
Contribute to data dictionary/metric definitions and catalog/lineage and Business Glossary documentation; support POPIA/GDPR compliance in design and testing.
Agile delivery and operations
Participate in backlog refinement, estimation, sprint planning, reviews/demos, and retrospectives; maintain Jira/Azure DevOps items and documentation.
Prepare user guides and release notes; support stakeholder training and change management to drive adoption.
Support report refresh schedules, basic environment management (dev/test/prod), and version control of BI assets (e.g., Git, Power BI deployment pipelines).
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business Analysis, Accounting, Actuarial Science, or related field.
3–8 years’ experience in business analysis and BI delivery.
Strong SQL skills for querying and reconciliation.
Power BI skills: DAX, Power Query (M), data modeling, RLS, performance tuning; PL-300 or equivalent certification advantageous.
Understanding of dimensional modeling (Kimball) and ETL/ELT fundamentals; ability to create/read source-to-target mappings.
Familiarity with Agile delivery and tooling (Jira/Azure DevOps); basic knowledge of DevOps practices for BI assets.
Strong analytical, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills; attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks.
Nice to have:
Exposure to Azure data services (Data Factory, Synapse, Databricks) and gateways.
Experience with data catalog/lineage tools (Purview, Collibra).
Knowledge of additional BI tools (Tableau, Qlik) and basic scripting (Python/R) for data wrangling.
Awareness of usability/accessibility standards for BI products.
