Mō te tūranga | About the Role

This role is a business development position within Institutional & Business Banking, focused on accelerating sustainable growth across Agribusiness and corporate clients in Northland.

This position reflects the continued growth and strategic importance of Agribusiness and commercial clients within Te Tai Tokerau.

The purpose of this role is to:

  • Develop and execute a targeted business development strategy for agribusiness and corporate Māori and Iwi clients in Northland

  • Originate new-to-bank opportunities and transition them into enduring, profitable relationships

  • Act as a trusted partner to Māori and Iwi customers, demonstrating deep cultural competence, commercial acumen and sector insight

  • Contribute to the bank’s Māori and Iwi strategy through leadership, advocacy and collaboration

The Business Development Manager works in close partnership with Relationship Managers, Credit, Risk, Product and Sector Specialists to originate new business, deepen existing relationships and deliver strong, balanced outcomes for customers, communities and the bank.  

1. Customer outcomes, financial performance and growth

  • Achieve agreed business development targets, financial performance measures and portfolio growth objectives

  • Originate high-quality agribusiness and corporate opportunities, including lending, transactional banking, risk management and specialist solutions

  • Drive asset and liability growth while maintaining disciplined returns and risk appetite

  • Build long-term, trusted relationships with key decision-makers across Māori and Iwi organisations

  • Partner effectively across the bank to deliver seamless, end‑to‑end customer solutions

2. Business development and market leadership

  • Identify, pursue and convert new business opportunities through strong networks across Māori, Iwi, agribusiness and regional ecosystems

  • Develop deep understanding of customer aspirations, intergenerational objectives and governance structures

  • Represent the bank within Māori and Iwi, agribusiness and regional forums in Northland

  • Support the growth of Māori agribusiness capability through insight, education and connections

  • Actively contribute to sector strategies and pipeline development alongside the Head of Māori and Iwi Sector

3. Risk management, compliance and governance

  • Originate well-structured opportunities that align with credit policy, risk appetite and regulatory requirements

  • Work closely with Relationship Managers and Credit to ensure sustainable, well-managed exposures

  • Maintain high standards of documentation, data quality and system integrity

  • Proactively identify and manage emerging risks within customer portfolios and the broader agribusiness sector

Nā tāu rourou | What will you bring?

  • Proven experience in business development, agribusiness banking, corporate banking or commercial finance

  • Strong financial acumen, including the ability to assess financial statements, cashflows and complex ownership structures

  • Demonstrated success in originating and converting new business opportunities

  • Understanding of agribusiness value chains, land-based industries and regional economies (Northland experience highly regarded)

  • Tertiary qualification in business, finance, agriculture or a related discipline
