Reuters is looking for an experienced journalist to lead our coverage of Pakistan and Afghanistan, two volatile and strategically important nations at the heart of South Asia.
Pakistan's military has rapidly repaired ties with the United States under the Trump administration in a surprising turn of events, struck a mutual defence pact with Saudi Arabia and further tightened its grip over the levers of power. Afghanistan is grappling with a humanitarian crisis of food, shelter and basic healthcare, exacerbated by aid cuts and curbs on NGOs.
We are looking for a newsroom leader who focuses on distinctive and exclusive news coverage, understands different story-telling formats and can ensure our text and visual teams work seamlessly together. As bureau chief, you will ensure the team provides fast and reliable spot news, supported by a South Asia breaking news team, as well as deliver scoops and deeply reported stories.
You will have ideally worked in conflict zones and have a broad understanding of safety protocols, have the diplomatic skills to deal with governments and have experience managing stringers in challenging environments. You will be calm under pressure and able to quickly get to the heart of a story or difficult situation.
Urdu and a knowledge of the region are advantages. Above all, you will be a strong writer, collaborative and have a track record of delivering distinctive and revealing stories.
About the Role
As our Pakistan/Afghanistan Bureau Chief, you will:
Lead a team of reporters based in Islamabad, Karachi and Kabul and stringers in the rest of the region
Prioritise stories in the region, focusing on those that will engage a global audience
Deliver deeply reported stories and craft compelling story pitches
Work with visuals and graphics to deliver stories in different formats
Mentor staff, work on their stories and promote talent
About You
To be our Pakistan/Afghanistan Bureau Chief, you will:
Be a strong writer with excellent news judgment
Have a strong track record as a reporter
Have experience of hostile environments and an awareness of safety standards
The deadline for applications is Friday 16th January 2026.
