The Building Inspector Senior is responsible for inspecting residential dwellings, industrial and commercial buildings, and swimming pools in construction. This position assures compliance with building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, fire, and/or zoning codes. The Building Inspector Senior also provides training to new Inspectors, oversees large-scale commercial projects, and conducts onsite plan review for the Permit by Inspector Program.

We Require
Five years of experience as a building inspector or plans examiner
High school diploma or GED
Post-secondary education and/or journeyman-level experience in electrical, mechanical, plumbing, or fire protection trades may substitute for the experience on a year-for-year basis
Possession of International Building Code (IBC) and International Residential Code (IRC) Certifications
Other Requirements
Must obtain one additional specialty certification in Building, Electrical, Plumbing, Mechanical, Fuel Gas, or Accessibility disciplines within one year of hire
Successful candidates must currently possess, or have the ability to obtain, a valid Arizona driver's license by the time of hire
We Also Value
Degree in Architecture, Building Safety Technology, Construction Practices, or related fields
Experience performing inspections of commercial projects such as schools, high-rise buildings, hospitals, jails, shopping centers, hotels, churches, tenant improvements, and single/multi-family residential projects
Supervisory experience at a municipality or in construction trades
ICC/ICBO Commercial/Residential combination certifications and Plans Examiner certifications
Job Contributions
Inspect residential dwellings, industrial/commercial buildings, swimming pools, and appurtenances in the process of construction, alterations, or repairs for compliance with building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, fuel gas, and fire codes
Provide training for building inspection staff
Write field inspection reports and notices in a clear, concise, and accurate manner
Use graphic instructions such as blueprints, schematic drawings, layouts, or building plans and technical data/drawings to verify that construction complies with approved documents, including all related zoning case files
Explain to contractors, owners, and developers the code interpretation or requirements that have been missed
Communicate to the public and businesses, imparting the methods for correction of observed deficiencies or deviations from approved plans to determine and ensure compliance
Perform on-site plan review of residential remodels and commercial tenant improvements
Issue Stop Work Orders for construction being performed without required permits
Oversee daily construction and inspections of large-scale commercial projects
Other duties as assigned
Working Conditions
Exerting 50 - 100 pounds occasionally, 10 - 25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 - 20 pounds constantly
Incumbent may be subjected to extreme temperatures, wetness/humidity, respiratory hazards, and noise and vibration
Incumbent may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, intense noises, and travel
Requires some work in field locations with exposure to dust, construction and operational noise, strong odors, and uneven terrain. Fieldwork may occur in all weather conditions, including extreme heat
Traveling from inspection to inspection in rural areas can require long periods of sitting
Protective Equipment Required
Employer-provided hard hat, steel-toe boots, and safety glasses
