Location & Schedule

In this position you can expect to work on-site between 3 locations in Denver. Those are, the Richard T. Castro Building, Police Administration Building and The City and County of Denver Building.

In this position you can expect to work 5 days per week with a 5am – 6am start time for 8 hours per day. There will be an option to switch to a flex 9/80 schedule after the first 90 days in position. There is also a possibility for on-call after hours for snow duties or other emergencies.

General Services manages over $330 million in city procurement spending, oversees over $28 million in annual utility costs, and focuses on the advancement of citywide sustainability, energy efficiency programs and business support services.

The Facilities Management Division (FM) is responsible for building management and maintenance for 6.2 million square feet in 140 buildings and structures, including predictive/preventative maintenance and work order processing. The staff is responsible for providing a full range of building services including plumbing, heating/cooling, electrical, painting, maintenance of doors/window/walls/ceilings/floors, and custodial services.

The Facilities Management Division is currently seeking a dedicated individual to serve as a Building and Grounds Supervisor that:

  • Provides clear and tailored communication to a range of stakeholders including internal and external staff, customers and high priority leaders

  • Supervises the work of employees who maintain lawns and grounds, create work orders for requests, remove snow, and perform other related duties

  • Inspects the work of service contractors, attends meetings, and review the quality of completed work

  • Develops goals, documents performance, provides feedback, and formally evaluates employee performance; provides reward and recognition for proper and efficient performance. Identifies opportunities and provides guidance for continual improvement to performance standards

  • Plans, assigns, and evaluates the work of staff members, establishes unit and staff work goals and objectives, and recommends process improvements in practices and procedures to increase operating efficiency and expedite workflow

  • Reviews, develops, or modifies work plans, methods, and procedures, determines work priorities, and develops work schedules to provide adequate staff coverage

  • Provides work instruction and assists employees with difficult and/or unusual assignments; encourages innovation

  • Assigns and distributes work, reviews work for accuracy and completeness and return assignments with recommendations for proper completion

  • Oversees work in-progress to ensure quality, effectiveness, and efficiency of the work and output, implements safety standards, and prepare work records and reports

  • Conducts hiring interviews and selects candidate(s) for job opening(s)

  • Resolves problems and mediates conflicts encountered during daily operations, determines appropriate solutions, and promote teamwork

  • Ensures quality, effectiveness, and efficiency of unit activities and safety measures

  • May be required to be on-call to address emergent needs

  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • Over 5 years of supervisory experience leading a team of up to 20 team members performing a wide variety of labor work in various locations, including employee engagement and relations

  • Experience managing multiple vendors that perform janitorial, landscaping, yards and grounds, trash, and pest control

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and is comfortable resolving conflicts

  • Hands-on leadership style, accessible to the team for mentoring and guidance

  • Capacity to support an open culture of learning; be able to give and receive feedback to move the people and organization to a better place

  • Experience working with contractors, building relationships, and maintaining communication

  • Experience conducting in-depth audits/inspections and presenting findings to stakeholders

  • Willingness to learn and improve by acting on feedback to better support General Services

  • Experience with snow duties – ability to plow or willingness to learn and manage snow tasks

  • Mechanical inclination to know what needs to be fixed and maintained on vehicles and equipment

  • Have a track record of safety excellence

  • Conducted HR performance reviews, documentation and necessary investigations in a prior position

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Education requirement: Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate

  • Experience Requirement: Three (3) years of experience performing a wide variety of labor work

  • Education/Experience Equivalency: Education/Experience Equivalency: Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements

  • Licensure: Requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application
