Position Summary:
The Bridges Inspector will be part of a team responsible for managing and maintaining all structures along Highway 407 ETR. This will include routine and maintenance inspections of bridges, culverts, retaining walls and overhead sign structures and completion of inspection reports including documentation on deficiencies and recommended repair options; assisting with the preparation of tenders, and inspecting the work of contractors undertaking bridge repairs and rehabilitation work; maintaining Department’s structure inventory and inspection databases.
Must have an ability to interpret plans and specifications, understand and accurately describe bridge components and types of bridge deterioration. The position demands a motivated self-starter with leadership qualities and excellent communication skills who can work well within a team environment to meet rigid schedules for inspection and repairs of bridges. S/he will be computer literate and conversant with any number of computer software packages.
Familiarity with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, especially in regards to staging, confined spaces and fall arrest systems. Knowledge of local, provincial and federal regulations is essential and a familiarity with the geographical area would be considered assets. The incumbent will be required to safely work on bridges and sign structures at high heights and over water and or traffic.
Direct Supervision of:
Consultants and Contractors and/or staff assigned to carry out structural inspections.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Performing on-site structure inspections, performing quality control of inspection data, submitting all data in the allowable timeframe and assisting with the organization and scheduling of structural inspections. Confirm and update inventory / data records of 407 Structures (including Bridges, Culverts, Overhead Sign Structures, and Retaining walls)
Input and update asset inventory of the various structures that form the highway infrastructure
Preparation of tenders, request for proposals, quotations, etc. and inspect work of contractors filling the role of site inspector for Contracts falling in the areas of responsibility
Contract Administration, inspection and oversight of work being carried out on structures assets
Problem identification and resolution both during inspection and during rehab work
Assist with winter maintenance operations as needed, including overseeing, managing and undertaking operations on Highway 407
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
Minimum of two (2) years directly related experience and a diploma in Civil Engineering Technology or degree in Civil Engineering
Strong oral and written communication skills
At least two (2) years practical work experience in inspection, maintenance and/or construction of bridges and structures is required
Must be health and safety oriented
Ability to obtain DZ license
Detail oriented, committed to accuracy
Must be available to work in the field, use ladders, assist with Traffic Control, working at heights and in confined spaces
Must be able to plan, safely execute, and organize work
Must be able to work as a team player and be available for occasional night and weekend work
