Responsibilities:
This position supports both Accounting and Payroll functions, playing a key role in maintaining accurate financial operations across the university. Responsibilities include receiving, reviewing, recording, and reconciling departmental deposits within the accounting system, excluding student accounts, gifts, and grants/contracts. Primary departments supported include Mercer Medicine, Mercer Press, the Grand Opera House, Athletics, Auxiliary Services (including vending operations), and other areas as needed. This role ensures deposit batches align with bank activity while remaining clearly identifiable by department and also processes credit card transactions for multiple units.
In addition, this position provides essential support to Payroll, including coordinating mass mailings, maintaining records, and serving as backup assistance when needed. The role also contributes to overall office operations by managing front-office responsibilities such as monitoring visitor traffic, handling incoming and outgoing mail, and responding to general phone inquiries.
Qualifications:
A high school diploma/GED and two years of prior support experience that includes prior bookkeeping/accounting experience and experience in the use of multiple computer applications.
Strong Candidates will possess the following:
Strong attention to detail and accuracy in financial data entry and reconciliation
Solid understanding of basic accounting principles and cash handling procedures
Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
Proficiency with accounting systems and Microsoft Excel
High level of organization and ability to maintain clear, well-documented records
Strong problem-solving skills and ability to identify discrepancies
Effective communication and customer service skills
Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively across departments
