The primary purpose of this position is: This is a developmental position with known promotion potential to the target position of WG-5309-10 (Boiler Plant Equipment Mechanic). Incumbent works closely with the supervisor in performing duties identified in the full performance standard core personnel document/core document.

Major Duties:

  • -Plans and lays out work from blueprints, sketches, drawings, specifications, guides, codes, and work orders. - Troubleshoots heating boilers, heating systems, and fuel power boilers with complex problems and extensive repairs requiring judgment to locate malfunctions. - Installs, modifies, overhauls, repairs, and maintains a variety of complex heating boilers and/or heating systems, single and multiple fuel power boilers, and associated auxiliary and pollution control equipment. - Performs preventive maintenance on heating boilers and/or fuel power boiler systems and auxiliary. - Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work environment. Uses and maintains tools and equipment.

Qualifications: In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the Industrial Equipment Maintenance Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the job of a Boiler Plant Equipment Mechanic without more than normal supervision. JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: Knowledge of basic principles of the classified titled or related field. Skill in communicating factual and procedural information clearly, orally and in writing. Ability to learn basic techniques of the classified title. Ability to analyze problems to identify significant factors, gather pertinent data, and recognize solutions. Ability to plan and organize work, and consult effectively with co-workers. PHYSICAL EFFORT: Required to climb, stand, stoop, bend, stretch, crouch and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts parts and equipment up to 20 pounds. Occasionally lift objects up to 35 pounds without assistance, and over 35 pounds with assistance from another worker or weight handling equipment. Most heavy lifting is accomplished through the use of mechanical devices. WORKING CONDITIONS: Works inside on concrete floors where areas are occasionally drafty and damp. Occasionally works outside. Exposed to varying degrees of temperature and humidity. Subject to presence of dirt, dust and grease, possible irritation of skin and eyes by aircraft fluids, frequent exposure to possibility of cuts, burns, abrasions, strains and injury from use of tools and equipment and to falls from aircraft or work stand. Must wear safety shoes and glasses. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
