Body Control Module Product Software Design Release Engineer DRE

Milford, Michigan, United States of America Full time

Job Description

VMEC BCM Product Software DRE – Expanded Role Description

The following outlines the expanded roles and responsibilities of the Product and Program Software Design Release Engineers (DREs) supporting the Body Control Module (BCM) within VMEC at General Motors. These roles are essential for ensuring the quality, calibration alignment, and program delivery of software features for current and future vehicle programs. Each position serves a distinct function within the development and execution lifecycle. The VMEC BCM Product Software DRE is explicitly a software-focused role. This position owns the embedded software behavior, quality, and release flow for BCM/ELM and related body-domain controllers. Mechanical and hardware ownership remains with other DRE roles; this role is dedicated to software content, software issues, and software-driven customer behavior.

Role Overview

The Product Software DRE is the technical lead responsible for software quality, feature tracking, calibration impact, and end-to-end ownership of software-related issues across Agile Release Trains (ARTs). This role ensures alignment between software development, calibration integration, and release visibility to all stakeholders. The Product Software DRE acts as the single point of contact for product-level software concerns in the BCM/ELM domain, providing clear technical direction and status for programs, leadership, and cross-functional partners.

Key Responsibilities

This role leads technical investigations of software and calibration issues across all ARTs affecting BCM/ELM modules, using tools such as CANoe, CANalyzer, VSpy, and Lauterbach to analyze logs, debug software, trace faults, and drive end-to-end root cause resolution with clear documentation of problem statements, data, fixes, and validation plans. The engineer collaborates closely with Component Integration Engineers and bench owners to plan and execute bench and vehicle evaluations, define robust bench/vehicle setups, confirm issue reproducibility, and verify that proposed software and calibration fixes resolve concerns without side effects, while documenting findings for ARTs, program teams, and leadership. Responsible for performing comprehensive RPN-based risk assessments, lead read-across analyses to other programs and variants, ensure visibility of outcomes in program risk registers and launch readiness discussions, and maintain traceability from original concerns through read-across results to the software releases that address them.

As a calibration subject matter expert, they understand how calibration parameters influence BCM/ELM software behavior, review and challenge calibration change requests, plan on-bench and in-vehicle evaluations with calibration engineers, ensure updates are correctly bundled into releases, and track and document calibration and feature changes per build to support communication, warranty investigations, field issues, and continuous process improvement. The role also regularly reviews Jira Needs, Features, and Stories for calibration and feature alignment, ensures ART backlogs and PI plans reflect the work needed for high-quality software, provides clear data-backed readiness assessments at key milestones, informs PVCLs and Program DREs of product-level impacts and LRD needs, supports program forums and gate reviews as the voice of BCM/ELM product software, and serves as the bridge between ARTs and subsystem engineering to maintain requirement traceability, clarify ownership and interfaces, and advocate for the body-domain software perspective in broader architectural discussions.

Requirments

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical field.
  • 5–7 years of experience in embedded software development, software integration, or software release engineering (automotive experience strongly preferred).
  • Working knowledge of automotive software development processes and standards (ASPICE, ISO 26262, etc.).
  • Familiarity with CAN/LIN communication protocols, Vector tools (CANoe, CANalyzer), and log analysis.
  • Experience with JIRA, Git-based ecosystems, and software configuration management.
  • Strong problem-solving and debugging skills, with demonstrated experience driving software issues from report to root cause and verified fix.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills; comfortable interacting with cross-functional teams and leadership, and presenting technical content in a clear, concise way.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Prior experience as a DRE or Software Release Owner for embedded automotive modules (preferably BCM or other body-domain controllers).
  • Understanding of GM Global BOMS (Bill of Materials), WERS, PRTS, and calibration workflows, including approval and delivery processes.
  • Exposure to calibration tools such as ACAL and test archive generation processes.
  • Experience working with supplier software teams and managing delivery, integration, and quality of supplier software to a GM program.

Additional Notes

This position offers a high level of visibility and impact on vehicle programs and is ideal for someone looking to grow technically and broaden their system-level understanding of embedded electronics and controls in GM vehicles. It provides the opportunity to influence current and next-generation vehicle architectures and work at the cutting edge of automotive technology. The VMEC BCM Product Software DRE role is designed for engineers who want to “own the software” in the body domain: understanding how it behaves, why it fails, how it is fixed, and how it is released to customers with confidence.
