JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Work Shift: Mon - Fri, 7:00am -3:30 pm
Job Summary:
The HIM Birth Certificate Specialist is responsible for interviewing parents of newborns and collecting, verifying, logging and submitting all required information needed to accurately complete and file the birth certificates and/or fetal death certificates in accordance with state and federal regulations. This role ensures timely and compliant reporting to the state’s Vital Records Office and the Louisiana Paternity Establishment Program while also providing support to parents, hospital staff, and external agencies regarding birth documentation. Strong people skills and the ability to adjust schedules to accommodate patient needs are essential for success in this role.
Minimum Qualifications:
High School diploma or equivalent required
At least one (1) year of relevant experience OR Associate or Bachelor's degree, in lieu of experience.
Must be flexible, well-organized, and able to work effectively with minimal supervision
Strong time-management skills with the ability to meet deadlines
Knowledge of commonly used hospital and/or clinic systems, concepts, practices, and procedures
Proficiency with personal computers and Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
Excellent interpersonal verbal, and written communication skills
Ability to identify and anticipate issues that could impact the birth certificate process or HIM Operations and use analytical and reasoning skills to proactively resolve them
Preferred Qualifications: RHIT preferred.
Physical Demands:
Must possess good physical health. Some requirements include but are not limited to standing, sitting or walking for long periods of time. Lifting at least 10 pounds is required.
