Job Summary: This position is a Biological Science Technician (Wildlife), GS- 0404-5 working in Carr, Colorado for the National Black-Footed Ferret Conservation Center

Major Duties:

  • This is a temporary appointment intended for seasonal work that is less than 6 months or 1040 hours from the date of appointment/service year. It is expected this position will be terminated upon completion of the seasons work. The agency may non-competitively rehire an eligible temporary seasonal worker in subsequent years who works less than 6 months or 1040 hours in their service year. As a Biological Science Technician (Wildlife) your duties will include, but are not limited to, the following: Assists with outdoor projects such as trail maintenance. Uses established automated databases to enter, organize and perform preliminary analysis of collected data, using standard statistical methods in preparation of reports. Enters and retrieves data from geographic information systems (GIS) and/or other information management systems. Assists biologists in studying and preparing reports on effects to ecosystems from development proposals of local, state, and Federal government organizations. Participates in multifaceted wildlife studies, including carrying out a variety of research and survey methods, analyzing established data, and monitoring environmental elements related to conservation, management, and/or control of wildlife. Assists with performing biological studies for determining the manner and extent to which wildlife populations are affected by management activities. Prepares segments of recurring reports such as monthly activities and progress reports on individual projects. Collects biological samples ensuring correct documentation, reporting, storage, transport and delivery of samples taken. Uses field equipment including cameras, GPS equipment, binoculars, rangefinders and computers. Use of hand and power tools and equipment. Loads and unloads materials and equipment.

Qualifications: Only experience and education obtained by 11/21/2025 will be considered. In order to qualify for this position you must possess the Minimum Qualification. Minimum Qualification [GS-05] One year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility equivalent to grade GS-04 in the Federal service. Experience may include 1) assisting in the planning and conducting of wildlife censuses and surveys; 2) capturing, handling, and tagging a variety of wildlife; 3) assisting with wildlife studies; and 4) recording scientific data to prepare reports. OR A bachelor's degree, or have successfully completed of a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major field of study (or at least 24 semester hours of study) in biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours are directly related to this position. OR A combination of education and experience as described in 1 and 2 above which together equals 100% of the requirement Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
