AstraZeneca

Bioinformatics Lead

Spain - Barcelona Full time

Location: Barcelona, Spain (on-site) 3 days/week working from the office.

Are you ready to harness multi-omics and knowledge graphs to uncover the most promising indications for transformative medicines? Join us to lead the computational engine room of our Indication Research Platform, where your insights will help guide programs toward patients who need them most.

In this role, you will bring together experimental data, biomedical knowledge, and advanced analytics to shorten the path from hypothesis to decision. You will partner closely with biologists, clinicians, and data scientists to deliver reliable, analysis-ready data and machine learning-ready knowledge graphs that drive confident indication selection and clinical thinking. How will you connect real-world biology with computational discovery to create measurable impact for people living with serious conditions?

Accountabilities:
- Technical Leadership: Set direction for bioinformatics, quality control, statistics, and omics data engineering to deliver robust, reproducible science at scale.
- End-to-End Pipeline Delivery: Architect, build, validate, and integrate pipelines into the Indication Research Platform, enabling rapid iteration from data ingestion to insight.
- Knowledge Graphs for Graph ML: Design, curate, and optimize biomedical knowledge graphs to power graph machine learning that reveals mechanisms, associations, and indication hypotheses.
- Platform Strategy and Roadmap: Shape platform capabilities and prioritization, aligning technical investments to high-value research questions and portfolio needs.
- Data Standards and Collaboration: Coordinate with experimental units to embed best practices, ensuring standardized, analysis-ready datasets that reduce rework and accelerate study cycles.
- Program Coordination and Communication: Lead cross-functional indication research projects and communicate findings clearly to experimental teams, clinicians, and R&D stakeholders, turning evidence into action.

Essential Skills/Experience:
- Provide technical leadership in bioinformatics, QC, statistics, and omics data pipeline engineering.
- Build, validate, and integrate end-to-end bioinformatics pipelines into the Indication Research Platform.
- Design, curate, and optimise biomedical knowledge graphs for graph machine learning.
- Shape the Indication Research Platform’s capabilities and roadmap.
- Coordinate with experimental units and encourage best practices to produce standardised and analysis-ready data for indication research.
- Coordinate indication research projects and communicate findings clearly to experimental teams, clinicians, and R&D stakeholders.

Desirable Skills/Experience:
- Deep hands-on experience with multi-omics (genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics) and integration strategies for indication discovery.
- Proficiency in Python and/or R, and modern workflow orchestration tools (e.g., Nextflow, Snakemake, CWL) and containerization.
- Experience building and querying biomedical knowledge graphs; familiarity with graph databases and graph ML frameworks.
- Strong grounding in statistics and QC for high-throughput data; commitment to reproducibility, documentation, and version control.
- Experience working closely with clinicians and translational scientists, translating computational outputs into clinically meaningful narratives.
- Familiarity with cloud platforms and modern data engineering practices; awareness of data governance and compliance in R&D settings.
- Track record of leading cross-functional projects and mentoring teams.

When we put unexpected teams in the same room, we unleash bold thinking with the power to
inspire life-changing medicines. In-person working gives us the platform we need to connect, work at pace and challenge
perceptions. That's why we work, on average, a minimum of three days per week from the office. But that
doesn't mean we're not flexible. We balance the expectation of being in the office while respecting individual
flexibility. Join us in our unique and ambitious world.

Why AstraZeneca:
Here, science starts with people whose lives depend on better options. You will work in an environment that blends the agility of a biotech with the reach and rigor of a global organization, where unexpected teams in the same room unleash bold thinking on tough problems. We invest in cutting-edge data platforms and machine learning to turn complex biology into decisive evidence, and we value kindness alongside ambition so that collaboration moves at the speed of trust. Your contribution will directly inform where we place our bets, helping bring life-changing medicines closer to those living with rare and devastating diseases.

Call to Action:
Lead the bioinformatics vision that turns data into decisive indication choices—take the next step and help us build what patients are waiting for!
